I just put my first computer together, 1.2Ghz tbird, AIW Radeon 32mb DDR, 384mb PC133 Micron RAM and 128mb PC133 Toshiba ECC RAM, Abit kt7a-raid, 2x Maxtor 30gig. runing windows 98FE
in windows i try and open a program or something, and i locks up completly :|, nothing works. I have MBM5 installed and the temp reading in the systray is in the 30's so i don't think it is temp. Most of the time it works fine. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,

Are you overclocking anything? What's the CPU temp, and what kind of cooling do you have?

Does Win98 FE mean first edition?

Have you installed the latest VIA drivers? Have you installed the MS Win98SE patch for VIA? It definitely sounds driver-related. What about you vidcard drivers?

got the latest drivers for video card, but not VIA... right now CPU temp is 27°C. FE = first edition.

where do i get the via drivers?

Could also be memory related. Take out all but one strip of the micron memory. Try that for a while, and see if it locks up.

I just noticed you're mixing ECC w/non-ECC. Normally this shouldn't pose a problem, but it may be causing the prob! Take out that stick of Toshiba, the Micron is waaay better. DL the latest VIA's install all four drivers. It's a 4-1 driver; you only DL one package, but there are four drivers "inside" You'll be given the option of what to install. Check all four. See if that cures your problem. It should.

Troubleshoot. Reduce you system RAM to the minimun. What kind of sound card do you have? I know I had problems with my radeon and my vortex2 soundcard. New sound drivers solved my lockups. You're specs say diamond Mx sound, what chipset is this?

I think the sound card has an ESS chipset, but i can't find any new drivers for it... I thikn the problem must be memory related... i will try leaving the toshiba out for a while...

Seems to be working without that Toshiba RAM... anyone want to buy it? ;)
EDIT: still locks up without the Toshiba...:|
another question: does the kt7a-raid support DDR memory? and how much ram does win98 use? a friend said anything over 256mb is useless...
