Hi all, I'm new to the forums and, well, I thought this would be the best place to post this question.

I am desprate about this build because I want it to be perfect (At least perfect for my budget) So, I thought the pros (You guys) Could lend some advice.

Here are the parts I have listed thus far, note I havent ordered anything yet.

Mother Board:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131568
VideoCard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130247
I am going for SLI but I think at first I can only afford one.
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103539
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103932

To avoid links this is all of it:
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe ATX AMD Motherboard
EVGA Geforce 7800GT 256-P2-N515-AX 445/1070
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor
Antec TruePower 2.0 TP2-550 EPS12V 550W Power Supply

Now, things I dont have a clue on:
Ram, Case, And Hard Drive (Well i have one, its a 80 gig Sata 7200 I forget the brand =() I just need advice on what i should do now, or anything I should change. what you see now is what I can afford as of now, I plan on SLIng the 7800 GT in about 2 months.

As for a Case, I would like one under 70$ With great air flow and a decent look.

Thanks

Im pretty sure ill need a 500 watt + for SLI, And i thought only certain PSU's worked...Like they had certain plugs on them. Can anyone clear that up?

Welcome to AT.

Looks like you have some nice stuff picked out.
Have you thought about going dual core for the CPU?

You have a nice monitor to take advantage of the resolutions that 7800gt SLI is going to be good for, right?

For the case, it's a lot of personal preference. I'm partial for Antec and Lian-Li.

There's a 400gig WD out that looks pretty appealing

For the ram, budget ram will actually work fine, but depending on if you're overclocking and such, you might want to look into some more expensive stuff.

What you have so far is nice, but it's pretty expensive. For example, just get an Opteron 146 and overclock it. It should reach the same speed as the 3700+ can, but it's a little cheaper. Also, that ASUS board is very much overpriced. Just get an Epox 9NPA+ SLI. You could save money on the PSU by going with a Fortron Source.

If you already have a SATA drive, just get another and run them in RAID 0. I'm not sure if it has to be the same make/model, so you might want to check that out.

Corsair's and OCZ's value lines are good RAM choices for a build of this budget. They're very reliable.

A case is a case. Get whatever's cheap.

My monitor should be fine. I did think about Dual CPU but its quite expensive, and I don't know how much better it would suit me than the 3700. I only game, thus very rarely run more than one game at a time.

The mobo may be a problem, its so hard to get ><. But I want it to take full advantage of SLI. I have only heard good things about it. But thats still something i may change. I was also looking at the SLI A8N-Premium Board.

If you want to take full advantage of SLI then you'll want the latest nVidia drviers which support dual-core. Which means you'll also want a dual-core chip.

I say SLI the cheapest quality 24 pipeline 7800.. which happens to be the $470 eVGA

As for case.. quality is only $51 shipped

Get the Seasonic S12-500 if you're going to have $600+ worth of video cards in your system.

Yeah, the board seems to be very good, but in general, SLI is not a really great way to go imo.

If you have a really big budget though, I guess go ahead with SLI.

Seems to make more sense to me to get a single good card and then wait for the next gen of cards to come out and upgrade rather than buying two cards from the same generation.

My thought was by going SLI i should be set not to have to upgrade for a while (As 2 of these cards should be able to power games for at elast 2 years, i hope?) because I'm going into college soon, and I don't think i can afford many upgrades after this one.

Welcome to AT.

That motherboard is probably the best SLi board on the market.

Video card(s) is/are great. eVGA has the best warranty of any manufacturer of any computer part.

If you strictly game when gaming, thats a great CPU. But if you do other things like instant message or use a web browser while gaming, then you would probably want to go with a dual core 3800+ for about $100 more.

As for the PSU, I reccomend the Fortron AX500-A. (or to save a few dollars, go with the unsleeved version. IIRC the model number for that is AX500.)

For RAM, youre gonna want to go with a minimum of 1GB, preferably in one stick. Corsair ValueSelect for the lower end (but still great quality) and OCZ Platinum for the high end.

For the hard drive, I reccomend the WD 400GB drive with 16MB cache. Performance difference between that and a 74GB raptor is less than 1%

The case, any Antec, Lian-Li or Chenming. My personal favorite being the Antec P180 or the Antec Super Lanboy. Not 100% sure on the Lanboy, but I think both are over $70 :(

I don't know that instant messaging and web browsing require a dual core ;-)

Well, would it be best to stick with what i got, Or get an 8x8 bandwith board with a Dual CPU. . .

Now mobo becomes a problem, because...well its getting expensive ><. now im looking for a decent board that is not the A8N32...

Well for your motherboard then look at the cheaper A8N-SLI (still Asus). I think the only difference between that and the A8N32 is it doesnt have the heatpipe northbridge cooler thing. $122 IIRC.

And that was the CPU I was talking about :)

Essentially one core for the game and one core for the other stuff. It doesnt always divide out that way, but its double the raw processing power.

ok, I'll go with x2 CPU 3800. and the A8N32 Mobo. That should more or less take full advantage of the system.
