This is what I've decided on so far. I want to get the best I can. Tell me what you think.

ATHLON (TBird) 1.4GHz $225
Asus A7A266 $132
Antec Full Tower (SX1030) $ 92
512mb Crucial PC2100 $131
IBM Deskstar 60GXP $ 90
ACER 56X CD-ROM $ 27
Toshiba 16X DVD $ 53
Teac 1.44MB Floppy $ 8
250MB ZIP DRIVE INTERNAL $ 63
Visiontek - Geforce3 $345
Hercules Game Theater XP $137
Samsung 955DF 19" $269
WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL $137
ACAD OFFICE 2000 $148
Misc. $100
Shipping ~$100
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Total $2093

Would you change anything? I can wait about a month or so to get it, if there is anything new coming out or you think that prices will drop considerably. Are there any problems with any of this working with Win2K?

Everthing looks awesome there, except the sound card. I would go with a SB Live! 5.1. Also, didn't know you could get a 1.4 yet.

Will the 56x CD-ROM be worth getting, or will the 40 something the DVD has be plenty. I won't be playing off the CD, but will I see a difference?

I've heard nothing but bad things about SB LIVE! I have an old LIVE! and I hate it. If my speakers are turned up very much You here a crackling sound and the sound isn't good. Plus I save $70 w/the herc over the LIVE! 5.1

The hercules game theater are alot better than the sb live 5.1!!!! And the sb live is hounted with problems these days.

56X cd rom... well dvd roms often does fine. And I don't see any cd'rw there. so the audio copying shouldn't be a problem either. It's a very nice system!

I do plan on getting a plextor cd-rw, but that will be later. What I was thinking is that when I do get a burner I would get a SCSI card, a SCSI burner and CD-ROM, and maybe a SCSI hard drive to boot off of. Not sure yet, but that will be Christmas at the earliest so I'm not worried about it.

sb live is crap, dont' lsiten to what they say....

the GTXP offers better 3d positional support, better analog clarity (though, i'd say it's indiscernible between most sound cards), and every possible connector u could think of...also, channel switching feature is awesome...

Sound card aside, is there any thing else I should change, I need, or I don't need. Maybe I should tell you what I'll be using it for. I want to use C++, Photoshop (or Paint Shop Pro, depending on how my wallet is doing), making all kinds of reports and stuff in Office, and most impotantly GAMES! I am only 16 right now, and I'm only a bag boy making $5.75/hour, so cost is an issue, but to me performance and reliability outweighs cost on most things.

the 955DF is a good monitor, i have one, but with your kind of sys, you might want to consider the higher end 900NF or 900IFT
keep the GTXP
might want a Epox 8K7A, Gigabyte GA-7DXR or GA-7VTX, MSI K7T266 (should be bug free now)as you mobo since the ALi chipset doesn't offer the performance of the 760 or KT266, or if you can wait, see the the nForce and the new SiS can bring
you don't need the 56X CD if you have the DVD, it loud, and you won't notice too much difference between that the the 40X of the pioneer
if you want a SCSI drive now, check this out, Quantum Atlas 10K II -9GB SCSI U160 10K RPM Drive with 8MB buffer and 4.7ms seek, this should be nice to boot off to

You can ditch the cdrom and like Inguyen said, you shouldn't need any software expenses. Depending on where you buy from, the shipping might be a little low. Also, if you can manage to wait until the Athlon 4's come out, there should be some price drops across the board, especially in the FS/T forum. Cash will need to be raised for those guys' new systems and out dated 1.4gig tbirds will be discarded.
