First of all..

What YOUR PC will be used for. - Gaming. Gaming, more gaming. SupCom, FPS', things of that nature/intensity.

What YOUR budget is - ~$500 CAD

What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from - Canada ;)

IF YOU have a brand preference. - No.

If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts - Yes. Seagate 250gb 7200.10 sata drive, and Enermax Liberty (ELT400AWT) 400 watt PSU, Coolermaster ATX basic case

IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads - Yup.

IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds. - Will more then likely be overclocking the CPU, but not the gpu beyond what comes out of the box.

Hi guys, thanks for giving this a read. Basically, here is what im looking at getting (all prices are Canadian dollar):

Samsung SH-S203B Black Sata DVD+RW 20X8X16 DVD-RW 20X6X16 Dl 18X/12X Int Dvd Writer Oem - $25

EVGA E-GEFORCE 9600GT Superclocked 675MHZ 512MB 1.8GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDTV Out Video Card - $178

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro LGA775 2500RPM 45CFM - $18

OCZ Gold XTC PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-12 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit - $52

Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 Dual Core Processor LGA775 2.2GHZ 800FSB 1MB Retail - $95

~$488 with tax and express shipping! from canadadirect.com

----

Two questions for you guys, that should be simple:

1) What do you think of this build, simply put. As stated above, this is for gaming only. SupCom, FPS', that sort of thing. Id like it to play more or less anything I want to throw at it. Also, im sort of concerned that my PSU will be enough to power that nice new 9600GT. It's a good PSU.. but let me know.

2) This build would be replacing the following setup:

Dell XPS400/9150
Pentium D 830 Smithfield (90nm) 3.0ghz
Whatever random dell branded mobo they use..
3gb PC2-4300 DDR2
ATI X1900XTX 512MB PCI-E

Going off the specs I posted above, how much of a gain should I expect to see from the upgrade im looking at? So far, from what I can tell, it should be a pretty good boost. It's perfectly ok to tell me that Im out of my mind, though, and that I shouldnt spend ~500 bucks for only a marginal upgrade if thats what it amounts to :)

The other reason for doing this is, I will be able to give my old system to the wife, which will in turn free up her old box to become a file server/linux firewall which ive been wanting to do for quite some time.. so its sort of win/win.

I might be getting a build very close to this but with Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C5DHX 2GB instead of the OCZ and an E4500. The Video Card is available at NCIX for 164$ CAD until 31 march.

Excellent, thanks for the heads up on the card. Any comments from anyone about wether or not the psu I currently have will be able to run all the new hardware smoothly? +12V1 and +12V2 on this PSU are both 20A.

I would think you should be fine with that PSU then, assuming it actually puts out what it claims. The build looks pretty good overall, although I would see if you could find even a little bit better deal on the RAM. Also just be aware that you may have to manually up the RAM voltage on your motherboard for OCZ RAM to work properly. (This is true for any RAM that's rated to run at more than 1.8V, but OCZ just about exclusively makes high-voltage RAM.)

Thanks DSF, maybe i'll take a look then at the Corsair memory that the poster above mentioned. the Enermax PSU i have is pretty solid, and atleast under the tools I have shows that its putting out the advertised amps.. So i'll give it a go and see how it runs under load.

Any comments on my second question? As far as how much of an upgrade this purchase will be as compared to the system I have now.. what I should expect to see there in a "real world" type of way.

Thanks!

Should be a nice upgrade, especially once you overclock the CPU.

Looks fine to me. Although I would double check power requirements on the 9600GT and see how many amps you have on your 12V rail

According to the 9600GT's requirements, it says 425watt psu and i believe 32A (cant find the specs atm) combined 12v. The enermax I have is 400watt with 40A combined 12v rails.

so that just means you have fewer amps on the 3.3 and 5v rails... you should probably be ok

although it never hurts to have a little extra headroom, the decision is yours

Go for 8800GT or 8800GTS 512MB instead of the 9600GT. For $178, you can buy an 8800GT that will be significantly faster, or for $30 more you can buy an 8800GTS 512MB that will be even a bit faster than an 8800GT.

...Are you sure about that? Im in Canada.. the cheapest I can find a 8800GT for is about $230 bucks AFTER rebate. I was under the impression the 9600GT was considered to be in a lower price bracket in general then the 8800GT.

I would just get an intel e2160 or e2180...they all overclock the same. My e2180 does 3ghz on stock voltage!

I would also recommend getting some g.skill ram. I use it with that same mobo and cpu without a single problem...I may be willing to sell it(considering getting 4gb) so if you are interested pm me

Also, why not just keep the video card you have for now and wait till you can afford an 8800gts 512mb or atleast 8800gt oc. The 9600gt is gonna be low end soon and the 8800gt/800gts medium
