nerdiness example:

Apparently MAIDs can be used for backup, unlike RAID, and you also get to WORO. I personally prefer some RAID and Tape WORMs.

random vendor link I pulled off of google
lol

That said,

  • Single Cabinet Up to 896 SATA drives
    Storage Density 28-896 TB
    Power Consumption - Standby
    (min/max by shelf) ~710 watts/~3,255 watts
    Power Consumption -
    Full Operation
    (min/max by shelf) ~1,140 watts/~6,035 watts

Just benchmarked it and I am getting 42.7MB/s from an array to tape:( FYI my HDD arrays (10 to 10) are doing 100MB/s to each other right now and I was hoping to match that:(

Ultrium4:
04/17 20:30:21 Kb copied : 1433216
04/17 20:30:21 Total time : 0.6 minutes
04/17 20:30:21 Throughput : 2563.358 mb/min

I have a good feeling that the scsi drivers are at fault.:(
I am using an LTO-3 tape however but still:( The current source is a 1TB SATA RAID0 array (adding two more drives to make it a 10 tomorrow:D)

I ran some larger benchmarks (> 10GB) and the speed only increases to 43MB/s:(

On average I've been getting ~3000-3500MB/min which is less than I expected :(
(50-60MB/s) and I KNOW the drives can do more.

Unfortuantely the SCSI card we purchased was an Adaptec rebranded as Intel which had an LSI chipset. Although I believe Adaptec uses LSI chips, I couldn't get any Adaptec drivers to work so I'm using default windows drivers (circa 2002) for now. We ordered an Adaptec-branded card this time so let's hope it works...(29160).

Can't wait to get our new card.:D

edit: I just benched the RAID10 array and it is getting a healthy 93MB/s

I've been slowly moving over to our new server that's running a Dell Power vault with 4 LTO-4 drives.

The robot and drives are all much faster than my older LTO-3 rig.

It's just a PITA finding the downtime for some of our super critical servers to upgrade to the new server which is running a new version of backup software that requires a reboot :(

urgh. I have to say that for all the bitching that people do when it comes to arcserve, you gotta love that it NEVER requires a reboot for backup servers or agents.

running LTO2 in an autoloader. 4 tapes a day we are doing but they aren't full just separated for different departments.

Using Backup Exec now (previously Arcserve)...

I can't complain. Works like it should across a dozen or so servers. We also do replication and some other redundancy.

Ship the tapes off each day to Iron Mountain.

What kind of transfer rates do you see on your 2's?

As for our transition from VXA to LTO-3nstead of 4-8 tapes nightly we are down to one (using comrpession):D.

I really need to brush on on BE. I had a feeling management wanted EV for the future and I'd push for integration.

I have to say that in our current state arcserve is doing a great job. The fact that most of their clientel bailed in the past between cheyenne and 11.x provides for some VERY deep discounts...:D

We just "upgraded" to HP Data Protector with two new LTO-4 autoloaders. My god, what idiots wrote this crap? I miss Backup Exec and we haven't even gotten rid of it yet :(

I feel your pain:(

edit: are you talking about deciding to stick with the Express version that comes with the some of the loaders or the full blown product (hence the "upgrade")

We currently use Backup Exec with a SDLT-4 and 2 SDLT-600s. But we in the US have always been outside of the corporate IT policy. This year we were integrated and a lot is being standardized. So now we have LTO-4s, which are badass, and HP Data Protector (full version). This is the equivilent of installing wooden wagon wheels on our Ferrari. :(

At my last job I upgraded us from a 50 slot 4 drive SDLT library ( in two sites) to a pair of these Data Domain's using their dedup and compression. I setup site to site replication via the Datadomain OS, and everything was sweet. I used BE11 to write to the device.

That's with a verify.

I didn't have a problem with Arcserve. We just standardized corporate-wide and BE was the best deal for us.

My biggest problem is we have to use at least 3 tapes due to the way we are departmentalized. It's usually 4 because our main file servers take slightly more than 1 LTO2 tape. (some nights it uses 1 tape, others 2)...

I am moving our B2D2D data over to tape for archival and each job is using 4 tapes! :(
I am on job 3 of 8 :(
