My never ending problems with my first home built computer continue. **I think the problem has now been solved :) :(**

As I was saying in my earlier threads, I am having problems with my computer freezing up. I have a p3v4x, 650e, iwill slocket II, WD 7200 rpm 20.5 expert HD, plextor 8/4/32, and a leadtek geforce 256 rev B hooked up right now. People in earlier posts thought it might be a driver problem. So the first thing I did was update my bios from 1003 to 1005. I went into windows and still had problems. So I downloaded the new via 4 in 1 drivers to a floppy on another computer. I got back on my other one and cleared all partitions. Then I created a 2.5gb primary one and set it to active. Then I restarted, formatted, and restarted again. From the a: prompt I switched to D: and typed setup to start installing windows for the third time ;) After I finished I didn't install any drivers, which meant I was still using "standard pci vga device" or whatever for the vid card. I installed the new 4 in 1 drivers first. After that I restarted and went back into windows. Then I added the drivers for my Viking 56k PCI winmodem. I got on the net and started downloading the new detonator2 drivers from Nvidia instead of using the leadtek drivers. I watched it for a while, but when it got to 50% complete I went to get a shower becuase there was still 13 minutes remaining. When I got out, the screen was black and there was a flashing underscore in the upper left hand corner. I figured it just froze up like it always does so I turned the computer off and then on again. However, when windows came up I saw the file for the new nvidia driver. I opened it up and installed it. Then I restarted and went to display settings. I went to advanced and started to look around. When I clicked on the output tab the screen turned black and my monitor started flashing orange like it does when the computer is not on. So I turned off my computer and I tried getting on the net to post a message here. The first three times the window froze. The fourth time I restarted and tried again, it froze again. I hit ctrl, alt, del to see what was not responding and it was rnaap instead of explorer. Don't know if that means anything or not. Do you guys have any ideas what could be wrong?

This is windows98 by the way.

Best way to troubleshoot these problems is to boot with minimal hardware - even an old ISA video adapter, if you have one - and add more memory and adapters, one by one, and try to identify any problem hardware. Run for awhile in DOS, and check HD integrity with the WD utility. If all is smooth, start over with minimal hardware and install win98, and again add adapters one at a time until the problem appears. The trickiest ones to identify are the hardware conflicts between two adapters.

All panels are off right now and the highest temp my cpu has seen is 31 degrees celcius. The mobo has only gotten up to 28. What I have in now is the bare minimum of what i can use to get windows up and running. I guess I could take out a stick of ram or something, but what would that do?

Try doing everything part by part. Just use one stick of ram. Connect just your hard drive, ram and processor. Use the "default" settings in the BIOS.

I know it wasn't listed but if you have a soundblaster live of any sort get the newest liveware. I've heard of lots of problems with the old ones.

Well, after trying everything else I could possibly think of. I decided to take the vid card out of my parents gateway and try it. Guess what? It didn't hang up anymore. So I guess I have a defective card. I called tech support and they said they tested the card with my mobo and the only issue was 4x agp and they sent me a registry file so it would be enabled. I guess I just have the worst luck in the world. My first plextor 8/4/32 came banged all to hell and I am still fighting z-buy for my money back. Buyer beware with those guys.
