ok..so here is the deal. I've got two main machines...both have gigabit ethernet...one is my file server/torrent box...other is my main machine for gaming, etc.

current network setup: linksys wrt54g 😛, moto cable modem, trendnet 100mb full duplex swith...PAP2 voip adap...three computers are wireless...

so...what i want to do...

move on to gigabit backbone for the main PCs
find or build a decent router so when i'm downloading on bittorrent i dont loose connection on all other computers.

so...for the backbone...i just plan on finding a decent fuyll duplex gigE switch...found some on newegg for ~150...

my main concern is the router...whenever i am useing azerus...all other comptuers loose connection to the internet...i'm guessing it is because my router is a pos...so...should i go with a better router...or turn and old box into a linux based router with smoothwall or something...or should i make a windows based gateway... >_<
 
Just a guess but you might want to look for a router that provides some sort of QoS or traffic shaping. When you're connected to the torrent do you lose connectivity when you're uploading? Or even when you download?
 
my linksys router has QOS but i figure it works for ******...i have had NO luck with it :/

as soon as my torrents start seeding and d/l+u/l...every other puter looses connectivity >_<

i am guessing (based on what ive heard before) that the linksys router cant handle a large amount of connections at once and because bittorrent requires a bagillion...that is why it craps out...i think i am going to build a linux based gateway and see if i can notice a difference...

anyone know of some good ones besides smoothwall?
 
the problem isn't your backbone, or your router, it's your illegal downloading...

stopping the torrents would fix this, but limiting the bandwidth would allow you to continue to rip stuff off.
 
I found a good solution.

I do not use BT coz it is mainly useless, it loads the Hard Drive with Stuff that no one uses any way.

However, I do not tell this to anyone.

So they think that I am a Big BT user and very Cool. (After that what BT is all about being Cool).

As a result I have a nice functional Internet connection and I am Cool.:thumbsup:

On the other hand I have few friends that use BT for serious research (rather the being petit thieves).

They have a connection that fits (it cost too), it works well, and the outcome of their Medical Research is really cool and is going to benefit Humanity in general.

who said anything about downloading illegal crap 😵? BT is not about being cool, it is ab out sharing and the betterment of technology...lets get back on the real subject here and stop whining about our personal beliefs.
 
My wrt54g router does QOS just fine. I don't use BT much if at all, but my client has an option to limit my download and upload bandwidth so I don't kill my connection regardless of the QOS.

weaver: there is plenty of legal stuff availiable via BT...but i didnt say i never downloaded illegal software...i just said i didnt say anything about that...

jack: i have yet to have an unsatisfied customer... then again my customers never try to push their beliefs on me...
 
enough legal stuff to required a dedicated machine for BT?
