The problem occurs when you have tcp/ip bound to two NICs in the same computer. Usually is solved by unbinding file sharing from the LAN NIC's tcp/ip, forcing LAN file sharing to use Netbeui.

i unbounded tcp/ip from file sharing and it lost all file sharing all together. i couldn't even see any of the other machines on my workgroup.

Install Netbeui and bind Client for MS Networks and file sharing to it. It will configure itself.

If the hardware's OK, Netbeui should work, as long as it's bound to Client for MS Networks and file sharing. Make sure you've got proper shared resources. W2k's default shares (the ones with $ at the end of the name) won't share over a network - they're created for administrative use only. Create new shares, giving them any name you want, and check the box that gives access to everybody. And make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that computer names are all different.

i can share files/folders but the time from when you double click a users computer name and the time it takes to load up a list of shared folders on my win2k machine is around 30seconds. from a win98se computer it loads fast w/ no problem. the speed of the file transfers are as quick as normal. it all works but its annoying to have to wait that long just to load that up.

I get the same problem. My workaround was to go to explorer/tools/map network drive and just map the drives on the network I wanted to use permanently. If I had to browse for it evertime, I would be waiting forever!

There is a known Microsoft Win2K issue when 2K is used to navigate through Win95/98 directories.
The MS support article number is: Q245800

I get to my wife's win98 directories over the network just about as fast as those on my own w2k machine. I had that lag (sometimes so slow it would even time out!) after installing second NIC for DSL modem. Problem went away after forcing LAN to use Netbeui, and restricting tcp/ip to internet connection and sharing.
