I'm using a Linksys router now, but I think this should work for Netgear as well. If the router has something corrupted that you need to get into the router to correct, most likely it is no longer acting as your DHCP server - i.e. it is not assigning IPs to your computers. If you were getting your IP from the DHCP server on the router before, you no longer have a set IP because the router isn't working normally.

Check your current IP address and subnet mask by going to Start->Run and type in "winipcfg". Click on the "more info" button and select your NIC where the down arrow is. My guess is your subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 or something similar.

To be able to get into your router's config menu, you need to have the same subnet mask as the router. For my Linksys router, the default subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, and it might be the same for your Netgear as well. In the instruction manual for your router, it should also list the router's IP address. My Linksys router's default address is "192.168.1.1". To be able to get into your router's config menu, you need to manually set your computer's subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 - then if you plug in your router's IP address in a browser, the password box should pop up.

To change your computer's IP address, right-click on "network neighborhood" and select properties. Highlight the "TCP/IP -> YOUR NIC CARD" and click properties. In the "IP Address" tab, click on the "specify an IP address" button and fill in a compatible IP address (192.168.1.2 works) and fill in 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask (or whatever the default subnet mask is that's listed in your router's instruction manual). After rebooting, the IP change will take effect and you should hopefully be able to get into your router's config menu via your browser.

Of course, once you've corrected the settings in the router, you can change the IP address setting back to "obtain an IP address automatically".
