My neighborhood has gone down the drain...

So my wife and I moved into a pretty decent neighborhood for what we could afford at the time. We moved into a 3br/2bath duplex down the street from the elementary school and figured it'd be a better place than the last dump we lived in. Anyways, a year ago (a year after we moved in) half of the duplexes were bought out and turned into section 8 housing. The neighborhood has become a cesspool of unsupervised kids running around the streets at all hours of the night, we've had our place almost broken into twice (thank god I have guns in the house... shotgun scared off the second attempt), and trash blows around the neighborhood like tumbleweed. It's become unbearable.... we're moving out ASAP.

At least you don't have a whole city of section 8s.

Note to public: Quit pumping out kids if you can't afford them.

We have subsidized housing all around my neighbourhood too and it sucks. They just sit around all day drinking beer with their dogs loose. My mother was walking our dog one day and one of their dogs ran up and attacked it. He got a nasty cut on the back of his neck and had to get the vet to glue it shut.

I remember in college me and a friend went apartment looking. First question was always "do you take section 8..." had one place say yes and we just turned around and walked out. It was funny as the woman thought we would be happy to hear.

In some areas it's against the law to discriminate based on section 8

Maybe they were thinking you were section 8 material. 😛

Note to public: stop voting on pro-welfare measures. Go on welfare with a family you get covered...have another kid, hope that money stretches.

Section 8 might be useful if it were limited to a few families in a neighborhood, but once the poor settle in, the middle class leaves. Ultimately, Bush shoulda scrapped it.

Section 8. Where the irresponsible do nothing and get goods and services for free.

the Idiot's American Dream

Only will get worse under the new regime...get used to it.

Yep, that seems to be the prevailing direction: take from those who produce and hand it to those who don't. "Sharing the wealth".

As soon as there is *any* indicator of section 8 stuff happening in or near your neighborhood, you need to get ready to sell your place because the property values will likely take a big hit when things (inevitably) get ugly.

But they can with the modern welfare state.

whenever one is 'buying' into a neighborhood you have to be realistic that others at that same income or less thinking of group living will live there too.

Most places around here of the lower rent bracket allow up to 2 adults per bedroom and no restriction on kids. Many of the lower rent places should be 1 bedroom, maybe 2...but cram 3-4 bedrooms in.

The kicker is most only give 2 parking spaces plus an additional 1 for each additional bedroom. I remember delivering food to those places and not having a place to even double park on the weekends. Quite a few had several cots in the main living area as well.

What really sucks is many of these wannbe investors are now living 5-6 to a house in many neigborhoods. They don't go to work during the day so there is no telling where their income is coming from.

We have a 1-2 million dollar community that has about 20 cars each day (many pulled up on the front grass) which hoodrats all booming music all day. There are officially 4 'owners' and since most of the cars leave at night only to return early morning it's not considered overnight parking.

My thoughts are set property taxes not only based on value, but also on number of adults living in a place. It's a more realistic approach as each adult is really what uses the 'services' not the property itself.

Damn shame really.

It's a sure fire way to raise crime and bring down home values.

Wasn't there someone else on here awhile ago that was a worked up because some Section 8 housing was being built right next to him?

Wonder what ever happened with that situation also...
