NO weird shit here, no injuries since it sounds like no one was in the car, just a small thing. Get the cash and use it however you like OP.

Sure, no weird shit now, but there are no guarantees that something won't pop up later. It's not uncommon for people to come back later complaining of neck pains or extra damage to their car. OP, just go through insurance to be safe. And why are you looking out for him? It's his fault he hit your truck so it's his fault if his rates go up.

So you're saying avoid confontation with the neighbor that might be a good person that made a mistake. Because of this mistake you want to file an insurance claim for a small bump that could raise his rates by several hundred dollars a year.

Be a decent human being and TALK TO YOUR NEIGHBOR. He might eventually be able to help you out and you never know you may NEED his help in the future. Think he's going to help you if you screw him over?

If there was no one in the car then you should get an estimate and present it to the neighbor with the options:
1. Fix my car, it should be around (estimate amount) but could be more
2. I go through insurance and you fix my car but your rates go up

Uh, if I caused $600 in damages to someone's car I'd rather pay an extra $200 a year for a few years then write a $600 and have to deal with shit. Like I already said, my insurance didn't even go up with the wife dinged another car.

If my neighbor was pissed for using insurance then I really don't give a shit. I don't need any more friends anyways.

The one time that my car got bumped by another was in a parking lot. I got out, told the lady that I didn't care as long as nothing had fallen off, and drove away.

UH, you're not 20 years old and single, Dingus. Your situation is NOT comparable to the guy who dinged the OP's car. No one cares if your wife hit someone else's car and your rates didn't change.

Even a relatively minor accident will likely knock the kid into a lower bracket at his age, which is going to be an extra 25-50 bucks a month. That's 300-600 bucks a year, and most states accidents stay on record for 3 years with surcharges, and another 2 after that without.

Just have him pay you before getting it fixed. IF he doesn't, go to the insurance companies. seems pretty simple

If you don't want to pay a higher insurance premium, then don't back into parked cars!

No one said the kid was particularly bright, or that the OP isn't doing him a huge favor by going out of pocket. I'm merely pointing out that you should stick to threads you're knowledgeable about when giving advice.

So whats the difference between him paying $300 extra in premiums for 3 years or paying $1000 to fix the OP's bumper?

I must have missed the original post requiring all responses to come from insurance agents. I've shared 2 of my experiences and posted my opinion without trashing anyone elses.

I assumed that they'd be able to pop out the dent and buff the paint or fix it somehow with a touchup job. I took my car to the dealership. They're body shop is moving to another location so he said I'd have to go there to get an estimate in writing. He appraised the damage though at around $1100-1200 because he said the dent is just beyond what he would consider repairable. The metal has a slight wrinkle in it... I called the guy's father and he was supposed to have called his insurance company today.

I hate that it happened and hope he doesn't end up paying too much more for a repair that shouldn't cost nearly that much to begin with. Body shops charge about as much as some hospitals do for minor surgeries. :p

In our neighborhood down here at least, it is illegal to park in the street, just because of this very reason, people have trouble backing out of their driveways when vehicles are parked on the street. You can get a ticket for it too. And if you are illegally parked and get bumped into, each person has to go through your own insurance company if there is damage. I guess where you live it's OK to park in the street?

300 dollars is definitely the low end of what he'd pay in extra premiums a month. You were giving the impression you felt he'd be wrong to do anything BUT go through insurance because his rate increase would be tiny compared to the cost to fix the fender. Which is demonstrably wrong.

And if you are illegally parked and get bumped into, each person has to go through your own insurance company if there is damage.

Wrong.
