my NEC 3520 uses up lots of RAM

just got a NEC 3520A. when burning (at the moment only at 4x) it uses up lots of RAM (i believe, as the computer lags heavily, it takes a while to switch between windows, and it's not the CPU that it's eating up cuz under task manager it says 2-4% of CPU usage)

how do i change this? i have set primary and secondary IDE channels to DMA.

my old burner a rebadged NEC 1300 would not do this.

ya, Nero steals all physical RAM - the bigger the burn, the more it takes.
I have 512MB on one system that I do a lot of burning on and after a full CD I am down to 20K (not MB) ftom about 360MB after boot.
When you close Nero about 80MB comes back.
I've been using Bysoft FreeRam (freeware) to keep an eye on this
I gues the app prewrites all the data to RAM instead of HDD - but I see no option to change things.
The ultrabuffer can be manually set from 1-80MB but that doesnt explain sucking up all the RAM.
Maybe setting something in XP could fix this.
Even tho RAM goes down to near zero doesnt seem to affect burns.
However if you jump into a game after that, might not be good.

Clone CD or DVD can write on the fly so no prob there.

still doesn't explain why nero didn't do this on my old dvd burner. granted that this burner can write up to 16x and my old only 4x, but i don't burn faster than 4x on either, but when using this it freezes my computer for a few sec. i used to have a similar problem when i just installed a new cd burner, but i realized it was cuz it was set to PIO and once that was changed it would run smoothly again. but i have set my IDE to dma so i'm very puzzled as of why it's lagging

Where did you set your device to run in DMA mode from? If you did it from the BIOS, thats fine, but you will also need to do it from the specific IDE controller in Device Manager as well.

you have 2 separate problems -
Nero steals RAM which you never noticed either old or new player
Your new DVD has windows config problems, or Nero config problems
Could be lots of things in second case - HiMat update, upper and lower filters, conflict with win CDburn, firmware, aspi layer etc.

maybe you could try some RAM monitor software to see when it eats ram heavily.

I used to have a 1300a also, I don't notice any negative performance issues with my new burner. What version of Nero are you using and what are your system specs?

ahh, high quality sarcasm.

I have a 3520a as well and use nero all the time. But I have never noticed such a dramatic draw on ram.

If you will notice, Ribbon13 has 3940 posts. And Ribbon joined on 2-1-05.
There are 28 days in Feb and 26 so far in this month.
54 days @ 3940 posts = 72.96 posts per day.
72 X 365 days = 26,630.4 posts per year
I have been here for 5.5 years, so if I posted the same rate, I would have
5.5 X 26,630.4 = 146,467 posts

So, you see, Ribbon 13 types out these nasty little zingers all the time because he is obsessed with posting here, and has nothing better to contribute, other than a cascading post count.
In other words he has no life, and is of little help to others in GH.

And so I say.................

Get a life!!!!!!!!!

Even if he does have quite a bit of posts in a short period of time he does help out in GH.

what RAM monitor do u recommend? or is there a software with that name "RAM Monitor"? i'll check it out.

on another note,

i have nero 6, v6.6.0.1

but there's nothing wrong with my nero software, because it burns fine on my old burner, so why would it have problems with my new burner? unless there's something missing with the drivers.

my comp spec:

512mb 3200 DDR
amd xp1800 (OC'd to 2ghz)
abit nf7s
ati 9800 pro

well i just d/led some nforce chipset drivers, hopefully it will resolve the problem (although i doubt it)

oh yeah, i did set DMA in device manager, i did not do it in BIOS, i dont even know where they have that option, but i guess i will check it out after a reboot if it it still results in something hogging RAM
