tilt wheel can be bound to whatever function you want, there are two thumb buttons, mainly the auto profile switching where it auto switches key binds per detected app make it so the amount of useful buttons the g9 has is far more than youd think. plus the any color led indicators make sure u got confirmation its in the right profile.
.

The mx1000 and the g500 seem to have at least 3 more programmable buttons than the g9x.
Am I counting them correctly?

I sometimes use the third thumb button on the mx1000 and also sometimes use the extra 2 buttons that are above and below the scroll wheel. I map the scroll wheel tilt buttons to copy & paste. Very useful. By default, in Win7, the third thumb buttons shows a stack of the current open windows. Also very useful.

The g500's 3rd thumb button looks well differentiated from the other 2 thumb buttons. Should be no problem.

The extra + / - button on the top of the g500 look poorly placed for regular use but are probably ok for occasional use. By default they adjust tracking resolution. I think they can be assigned to other uses. The 2 extra buttons on the mx1000 are much better placed ergonomically than those on the g500.

The g500 claims to have 10 programmable buttons.

I just downloaded the g9x quick start manual.
It looks like there are 2 extra buttons on top. A + /- pair just like the g500.
If I have that right, then the only difference is the 3rd thumb button on the g500.
Is that correct?

middle 3rd button on thumb is just asking for confusion during game play and just slows you down
but yes it doesn't have buttons flanking the wheel, i don't really miss them since the mx1000 buttons are all see saw clumsy rather than fast reaction buttons.

on the bottom of the g9 there is the profile switch and wheel mode button as well.

yes there are sensitivity buttons on top as well.

the review claims the tilt wheel on the g500 is messed up, i have no personal experience with that mouse so i dunno

i gave up my mx1000 long ago but I did remember that mouse was not that great for gaming either, the buttons were clumsy.

The MX1000 has 3 buttons by the Left Thumb (for a righthanded user), but personally I feel they are not in an ergonomic place to use them effectively. What I did like is the Express Up / Down functions by the Scroll wheel. That is a big help in spreadsheets. And for me, the overall size of the mouse is a bit too large, but my hands are not that big either.
