my mx1000 died -- what mouse should i get?

I really liked the mx1000.
I have large hands and it fit perfectly.
The buttons were exactly in the right places and were customizable.
Battery lasted a long time between charges.
Seemed precise & accurate.

But, it is slowly dying. Buttons and scroll wheel have become erratic.

I mostly do Office, IE / Firefox, Photoshop Elements, Dreamweaver CS5.5.
I sometimes do gaming, but not hard core first person shooters.
My newly rebuilt PC is an is-2500K using Asrock Pro3 system board.
A wired or wireless mouse is OK. Precision and customizable buttons are more important

What should I get that will work as well for me?

I have looked at pictures & reviews of:
Logitech MX518 ($37) -- buttons look small -- are they easy to use?
Logitech G500 ($55) --- buttons look like they are not placed correctly? Am I wrong?
Logitech G700 ($75) --- lots of buttons -- newegg reviews call it "grandson of mx100"
apparently a lot of mx1000 users like it.

Are there any other mice I should look at?

I would prefer cheaper, but it the G700 is the preferred mouse for mx1000 lovers, I would go for it. But, it is expensive.

I haven't used either the MX518 or the G500. I have a G700, and love it -- even more than my old MX1000.

Have you called Logitech to see if they will replace it ? ? Even if it is very old, they are very good with in and out of warranty items. I have one of the MX1000 myself and it is about 4-5 years old at present.

probably the 700
i use a g9 but the thumb buttons should be about that, 2 buttons very close to the thumb so you don't miss for games, i had a 1000 before and the 3 button thumb design was not as good for quick reaction activation.

buttons are placed correctly, the dpi buttons and such are far off because you rarely have to touch them, and shouldn't activate them by accident.

and spin wheel is the win

I have a G500 and I like it well enough. The button placement works out pretty good for me, I haven't noticed it being weird. My previous mouse was a Mx500 -> G5 -> G500.

I have had it for about a year, my G500 isn't peeling in the rubber sections like my G5 did, so that's kinda nice. All in all i'm pretty happy with it, try it out in stores if you can. I don't know how customization works, I don't really customize my buttons.

518 is pretty old, but i guess it is a classic, i don't like the shape myself though. depends i guess, since you are paying full retail yea it is a hard pill to swallow. maybe wait for a sale, add deal alerts on logitech mice and such on slickdeals, sooner or later, they all go on sale.

I saw the mice at BestBuy.
Not on display. They were inside boxes.
I tried the 518 and did not like the shape and size. Not what my hand wanted.

The G500 seems to fit my hand better.

I will wait a while for a sale. Last week, the G500 had a rebate on newegg that made it cheaper than the 518. That is gone now. But, I suspect it will be back.

Coming from a guy with similar taste in mice, I'd say either the Performance MX or G700.
You will pry my MX Revo, MX1000, Performance MX and G700 from my cold dead hands :)

Logitech mice do go on sale quite a bit. If you can wait it out you probably will get a deal eventually.

yup i use a g9...the wheel click is nice and stiff, and short..but i've seen people bitch about it.

also the g9 series has auto profile switching, meaning auto switching different binds/sensitivities and the rest for different programs, so the amount of useful buttons it has is more than you'd think.

other mice esp old ones do not get new features. logitech doesn't add features to drivers once they are out, so mx518 has a really old featureless driver for example. plus it has leds that change to any color which is good for identifying which profile the mouse is in at a glance.

I went MX 500 - MX 510 - MX 518 and finally a G500, I've liked them all, overall I'd say I liked the button placment best of the MX 500 or the G500 but they are all fairly similar in shape, I don't have any direct experience with the G700 but it seems like a good choice if you are looking for wireless, wired I'd go with the G500 :)

naw, the performance mx has an ok, shape, but the thumb button placement is serious effed up, way too high for any use during gaming, even a painful reach for desktop use, the wheel button tilt has no feedback either, its a bit of a mess.

btw the g500 is 40 after 20 dollar rebate at frys this week

I was about to thank you and order the g500 at frys.
But, today they have a $20 rebate and are selling it at $70.
$50 after rebate. Plus $6 shipping = $56.

It is $64 at newegg today. No rebate and free shipping.

I will wait a little while longer.
It was around $35 at Amazon and Newegg recently. Maybe it will be there again soon.

Pricing on the Logitech mice seems to change day by day.
Today, Sunday, the G500 dropped to $50.97 on Amazon. Free shipping.
I will keep watching this week and see if a rebate appears and also look at newegg. They seem to try to match or better Amazon prices.

It is hard to make a purchase decision when the prices keep fluctuating like this. It always seems as if it will be less (or more) tomorrow.

And again...

I looked at the g9x.

As far as I can tell from reading specs and looking at picures, the g9x is more physically customizable than the g500 but it does not have as many customizable buttons and because of that, it seems less usefull for general purpose computing.

Am I wrong? Does the g9x have as many buttons as the g500?

tilt wheel can be bound to whatever function you want, there are two thumb buttons, mainly the auto profile switching where it auto switches key binds per detected app make it so the amount of useful buttons the g9 has is far more than youd think. plus the any color led indicators make sure u got confirmation its in the right profile.

g9 is simple and has the buttons in the right place.

looking at the g500, it seems to have the same flaws as the mx perf, 3 thumb buttons that you can hit by mistake... 2 good buttons > 3 mangled buttons, the wheel tilt/click on the g9 is also distinct and error free.
