Can I stop Windows XP Pro from putting these folders in My Documents? I keep deleting them, but they come back.

I can't find a coorelation as to when they come back, but they do.

I think Tweak UI lets you remove them permanently. Otherwise, there's prolly a registry hack.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and: wrong forum.

Eh, I actually use the My Music folder on my lappy. Nothing really wrong with it.

My Pictures is useful in XP because when you go to select wallpaper it'll automatically look there as well. Beats having to browse for all my digitalblasphemy files whenever I want a new background.

it's not about the size, it's about the clutter. Would you want hundreds of empty folders strewn around the desktop?

I use My Pics/My Music, but My ebooks, My received files, My Little Pony...where does it end?

Except for the fact that everytime I want to change my wallpaper, it takes 5 minutes to load because I actually use the folder.

It won't load subfolders, at least for me. Make one called "Not Wallpaper" or something. :p

My only complaint about it was that MS didn't have the foresight to include a "My Porn" folder.

I mean, c'MON....

I hate all the "my" folders too. It makes the system look like it's set up for a 3rd grader, when in fact it should be a tool for world domination.

I don't understand the aversion to the "My" folders. They work great. Map My Docs wherever you like, and you get your pics thumbnailed, album art displayed and videos tiled. Works great.

umm...XP thumbnails and tiles your pics and videos ANYWAY. And you can use TweakUI to remap your Places (The left side of a Save menu), so that argument goes out the window too.

My point was that it requires zero configuration.

It's hurting me

It's hurting America too.

But more importantly, it's lame b/c if you like to keep all of your "user data" in one logical folder (say "data" with a buttload of specific subfolders under that) for easy backup purposes, it contributes to what I like to call "user data sprawl." Much easier to make backups from one logical folder than from 20 different folders all over the place...

Exactly. It bugs me, too. Plus there's the attitude that the computer is really the domain of Microsoft and all its junk...and the user's files are tolerated, but unimportant, toys stuck in a corner. I seem to recall that, even though the Windows default is to throw everyting into "my documents," some system restore-from-CD functions will wipe the contents of those directories.

I rated you as a 10 for that. :D
