MY MUFFLER JUST FELL OFF, GAH!!!

It's a given, I just was heading out the door to pick up a girl and see a movie, I hear scraping. It doesn't go away so stop and look at my tail pipe. It looked like it was at a funny angle so I tapped it with my foot, it was swinging free, only attached at one point... I get down on my hands and knees and the whole exhaust system right from where it comes down from the manifold is lying on the ground. CRAP!!!!!!!

Just a word of advice: go to an independent exhaust shop that does ?custom? systems. They won?t screw you over for power by putting a cheap, smaller than factory stock exhaust system on there, and they won?t replace converters when you don?t need them. Midas quoted me like $1100 once. They wanted to replace converters because the old ones were welded. Yeah, right, like they don?t know how to weld. I took it to a place recommended by my boss who had a custom exhaust put on his Eclipse GS-T. The bill was around $300 for the cat back, and I noticed that it was larger than stock.

my muffler is in bad shape too. first the tips rusted off... one at a time (there are two). then a chunk of the exhaust pipe to the right of the muffler rusted off. not there is a big hole it in (i guess my exhaust fumes never really make it past the muffler 😛 now the pipe where the tips used to be connected to, has also rusted off. i think the muffler is about to drop right off any day now.

I just got mine fixed a few months ago. I was driving my car without the muffler. It was very loud. I was just driving to go some where one day and then like out of no where I hear this scraping noise so I keep going. I finally figure out what it was, and it was my muffler hanging off. Then all of a sudden it was still hooked onto the car by the latches that it has, and then like it inverted totally and like it was kinda like holding my car back so I had to pull over. Come to find out that the muffler had punctured my back bumper. Pulled over on the side, and pried that sucker off. Finally got a new exhaust not too long ago.

Heh, just do it yourself. Grab a hack saw and cut off the old muffler and pipe as close as you can to the cat. I'm sure you can find a muffler and pipe for under $150.

hahaha and i thot my car was ghetto.. i guess i live in cali and stuff doesn't rust off like that tho...

No rust in Cali??!! WOW.. thats AMAZING!!!

no rust in FL is more amazing.....

apparently (according to my mechanic) my area in FL has the worst salt content in the country and is absolute hell on cars.

i dont know if its true or not, but he tells me that our proximity to the atlantic, the heat, and the humidity are hell on cars. eh, makes sense to me.

Next time, make sure you top off your headlight fluid...

It wasn't a rice job, the car is just OLD (21 to be exact). I can't get pics though because i don't have a digital camera. I'm probably going to rig it witha coat hanger to get it to a shop that I trust. It shouldn't be bad, it should just be a stock GM part. It's just really annoying. It's hard to do the coathanger thing because the tail pipe seperated from the muffler (didn't rust through, it looks like the seam between the tailpipe and the muffler came undone) so i'll have to crawl underneath the car.
