My MSI 5950Ultra VS. my ATI 9800XT... poor results?!

I have an MSI 5950Ultra which works GREAT! I have not overclocked it except for MSI's D.O.T option which is set to commander. My 3dMark03 score is 6594.

Today I got my ATI 9800XT in and instaleld it just fine and it works great aswell!! I bought it just to test them out against each other expecting the 9800xt to run cooler, use less power, and perform slightly better (though i am an nvidia guy). The main plus was gonna be pwoer since i am gonna use this card for an OCed system. The 3dmark03 performance i got was poor! the ogar test gave me a 0 fps result! while i get 2-3 on my 5959u! overall score was 6097.

Why would there be a 500 point difference in 3dmark03!?

*edit*
System:
DFI Lanparty II Rev B
AMD XP 3200+
1gb Kingston hyperX pc3200 2-3-2-6
audigy2 ZS
etc etc

I just ran 3dmark03 again after uninstalling the video and removing all nvidia traces and reinstalled the ati and got a score of 6385 which might not be bad since on the 5950 if i disable the D.O.T I get a socare of a lil over 6100.
I am gonna try to OC it and see.

*edit2*
with overdrive turned on i got a score of 6431

run some benchies comparing games like UT2k4, Splinter Cell II, etc... and see if you get different results there.

3dmark really isnt a good indicator of performance

You must have lots of money to be able to do that. I would if I had it too.

Use Nvidias forceware drivers #1

#2 plz list your stats of system.

#3 make sure there are no open programs and tasks running in the background. Including Anti Virus and stuff like that.

Also 2-3 FPS is screwed up badly. You can see my system by the link and i wasily pull of much higher frames than that.

List your rigs stats.

It's overclocked though.

True, but it's not even close to being in the same league as the 9800XT. I'm running 353 core/340 memory. The XT runs at 412 core and faster memory. He should be scoring 30% faster than me.

i posted some of the specs of the rig i am doing the tests on.

VIAN: not really I am in the Air Force so i get paid almsot nothing! but i get bored easy fast and spend my money on thigns i don't need to keep me entertained lol

Gamingphreek: there are no detotnator drivers they are now forceware and yes i had the latest forceware drivers installed when i did the 5950u test. There were no open programs durign any of the tests. and 2-3fps isn't screwed up bad, the most i have seen anyone get on the cpu optimization test during the "Ogar" scene was 5-6fps and he had an ATI 9800XT with an AMD 64bit 3200+.

Dman877: who said i paid $400? lol

Yes i know there calling them forcewares now. Try using hte beta 61.11. Thats what im using. Well you could have siad it was the CPU one. I thought you meant the GPU one (Ya know the lady walks in goes downstairs and kills an ogar). Nice system. However... like i said DOT is with MSI's drivers... use Nvidias reference driversnot MSI's. Im pretty sure that my PC has gotten more than 2-3fps... and my system is slower than yours. I think you should get a LITTLE bit higher.

oh no, if you install MSI's drivers off the cd first it installs al that D.O.T software and crap but then you go and install the newest forcewares from nvidias site but the D.O.T stays even though you are no longer using MSIs drivers

I think thats a sign of the drivers not being completely removed. Remove the drivers completely and install the forcewares. If you really wanna OC dont use the dot just use coolbits.

my nvidia is performing just fine the 5950 isn't the problem!!! lol the ATI is the problem. Also i tried, i can't OC the 5950 manually it gets graphic errors galore but the DOT works great! I just OCed the ATI to 428mhz core and added 10mhz to memory and i got the same scores as my 5950u with the DOT on full

Damn, I only have 350/335 and I only get 5300.

I see :)

Are you talking about the two ogres fighting. I get like 40fps there.

God damn im so sorry lol. Never done that before. Well anyways... for ATI just check your drivers. You prob already running the latest catalyst's i assum. It should be too terribly higher than that as Nvidia typically does very well in 3dmark. Other than that i have no idea why a card would run any slower. It MIGHT be a little slow compared to others but it is still plenty fast.

Remember 3dMark isn't everything :)

3DMark is useless and Far Cry won't show large performance differences because on the FX it runs under SM 1.x compared to ATi's SM 2.0. You should see some differences in lighting quality though.

I have to say it but it appears this was an ill-planned upgrade on your part. You didn't know why you were upgrading or what for, you simply dumped some cash without any reasearch and were expecting a slap-in-the face difference. Sorry but it doesn't happen like that all the time.

If you had prepared yourself better by running benchmarks and getting actual numbers you would be in a far better position to make comparisons.

lol first off this was NOT an upgrade i got the card for a good price so i said why not. nothing better to do :) and already have someone at work wanting to buy it for far more than what i paid for it!!!! Also i was not looking for a large performance differance at all i was especting the same exact performance and if any better just a 1% jump in score in 3dmark03 over my 5950u if that, i was just dissapointed and worried when i originally got a score that was 5% LESS than my 5950u. A slap in the face was not expected.
As for gaming benchmarks i really don't know how or care, i have a bunch of games instaleld like UT2004, Far Cry, Call OF Duty, Painkiller, etc etc but the only one i know of is Unreal Tournament (the original and best) where i can ahve it show me what FPS i am getting but it is too old of a game to even consider using as a comparison.
Other than that 3dmark03 is pretty much my best bet and a good overall way of comparing performance by matching the #'s compared to that of other ppl's
