My MS Internet Explorer Conspiracy Theory

Why, oh why, when you use High Security in any version of IE do you see this pop-up message box when you visit sites hosting ActiveX controls:

"Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly."

Try it. Enable High Security (MS wants us to be secure, right?). Go here or just surf a bit. That damn message box will appear and become so annoying your only option is to revert to Medium or enable ActiveX.

Modern UI design theory tells us never, ever bother the user with unnecessary message boxes. MS knows this. Yet even after 6 versions (actually less since they skipped version numbers with IE) they still do this.

Why, why, why? :disgust:

I set IE to high security so that things that embed it (like Kazaa) can't popup windows, and I do my normal browsing in Mozilla =)

Oh and what version numbers did MS skip? NT 4 shipped with IE 2.0, so maybe they skipped 1.0 but I'm willing to bet it was just an internal only build.

IIFC it was 1.0 or 2.0. MS has skipped so many version numbers in various products over the years I forget.

Haven't tried Mozilla though Opera 6.04 seems pretty good. It doesn't render FuseTalk reply boxes correctly, though. How does Zilla do there?

Also, is it true in Zilla you can block pop-ups except for those you request?

Where can I see some of those boxes to check? If it's these, then it's fine =)

Yup. I also use "right-click->Block Images from this server" to hide banners frequently.

opera doesnt render everything right, namely some CSS stuff, but it does a much better job than the broken IE5/pc and its a HELL of a lot faster than mozilla or galeon.

surfing = opera
webdev = mozilla

I agree on this, I use Opera for everything(cept my banking stuff, cause the bank only accepts IE, though they're supposedly working on Mozilla/Opera support).

Oh and Nothinman, thanks for the tip about high security/Kazaa popups, didn't know about that :)

Pop-up (and other annoying stuff) blocking - Edit, Preferences, Advanced, Scripts and Plugins, Unckeck the first 5 options under "Allow Scripts to:"

Security wise which is a better browser IE5.5, IE6.0, Netscape 6.0 (not sure if 7 is out yet), Opera, or Mozilla?
What do you think about the browser that comes with KDE?

Mozilla and Opera both have a fabulous security track record compared to IE, but they're not without their problems. IE can be fine, you just have to keep up on security updates ever week or so. I use Mozilla more for it's features and 'freedom' that IE doesn't give me, the security is just an added bonus.
