My motherboard sucks, can anyone help me?

I brought a Abit VA6 a half a year ago. Biggest newbie mistake I've ever made. The board sucks completely, but I don't want to spend another 125+ dollars for a good motherboard. Especially at a bad time like this.

The cdrom drives that I put on this computer runs at 5x no matter if its 32 or 48x. Not only that, but whenever I read from the cdrom, I can't do anything else, because it takes about 95% of my cpu processing power.

The second problem is with my bios and their soft cpu menu II thingie. The thing that helps you change cpu multiplier and voltage easily. Well, whenever I power it off, not restart, it'll reset my cpu settings to 366mhz(default). This only happens to the cpu settings, not anything else. I just installed a new piece of hardware and I can't seem to set it back to 733mhz this time. It just forgets as soon as I restart.

Lastly, my computer doesn't allways start up. It usually takes 2 tries to get my computer to start up. It couldn't be the power supply, I mean, it powers up and I hear the fans and everything running, but it just doesn't go to post or anything, just stands there doing nothing.

Also, Abit tech support sucks. Multiple emails, never got an answer. Tried their newsgroups, but no one seems how to fix it, even though I'm not the only one with the problem.

what are you trying to read with those cd-roms drives? drives that have trouble reading, will often hang or slow down a computer. CDRs, warped CDs, scratched CD's, etc. are examples. which drives (make/model) did u try?

first, have you managed to get at least the basics to work without the BIOS/CPU resetting problem and the power problem?

Check the battery on the board for cmos memory. On some boards, during resets, it will forget previous settings regardless whether or not it is plugged into the wall...

Trying to read any cds, cdr or retail.
I have a yamaha burner and a creative 32x.

I'll have to check the battery, it's pretty new still(only 6 months), I had this problem from the start. Perhaps the retailer had it for awhile.

Unfortunately, my cdrom reads at 8x for digital audio extraction, but it plays games and runs software fine. If this is the case, why worry about it? When I run an audio burn, I tend to make images anyway for my peace of mind. It took three months of being a super sleuth to get the right combo of drivers on this machine to get it stable. Good luck...

how do you have the cdroms attached? primary/secondary,master/slave? try different combinatios.

power/bios problems could also be related to the cd-rom problem

try a different power supply; could be that it isn't proving the right amount of voltage to each connector

The cdrom problem is with any attemps at reading the cd. Not extracting audio(never did that anyway).

I'll try a new powersupply later.

I changed the battery, but that's not it.

Same thing happen to my CD rom. Everytime I put a cd in it, it'll takes a while for the info to come up. After a few months I got mad and toss it out the window. Ordered a plextor scsi cdrom. If i were u, I'll catch the special right now on the plextor scsi. I just ordered another one.
