My monitor just fell and crashed to the floor HELP

Hey I was moving my computer around and left my monitor on my bed. I was leaving it for 2 seconds when a gust of wind came through the window and my 19" CRT crashed the hard tile floor with a bang. I started my pc up to see the damage.

When the computer starts up and goes through the DOS loadup screens the screen is all messed up. It is stretched to far to the left and also stretched too far both ways vertically. However once it loads past the black Microsoft windows screen with the green status bar gonig across. The screen seems to be the same as before the accident.

Anyone knowledgeable with monitors know why this could be? Should I open it up and see if theres any damage inside? Should I just leave it alone since once in windows everything seems normal as of now? Comments and suggestions please.

If it works in windows like it did before, why mess with it and potentially make it worse?

Did you hear anything rattling inside when you picked it up?

just seems weird to me that when booting the screens is all screwy but once in windows so far nothing out of the ordinary, then again i have no clue how CRT monitors work.

Sounds like it just lost the settings for the 640 x 480 at 60 Hz display resolution that your video card and mobo use at startup. Once Windows loads it tells the video card to switch to 1280 x 960 or 1600 x 1200 or whatever your desktop is set to.

lol, in windows try to set your resolution at 640 x 480 and see if it's skewy. if it is, then for sure it is broken at the resolution.

DO NOT OPEN YOUR MONITOR if you don't know what you're doing. There is stuff inside that can kill you.

hey

The lowest resolution I could set it to was 800x600 and it was all messed up. Does that mean this resolution will never work again? Windows resolution I normally use it 1280x1024. If I play any games that are played in 800x600 does that mean tehy will be all messed up? Is it possible to fix this?

I sat the monitor on the bed towards the middle but my bed is real springy and the gust of wind just toppled it over. It was like slow motino when I saw it crash down but there was nothing I could do.

He is absolutly right! My girlfriends brother in law did that and almost killed him. The thing was even unpluged and had enough juice to send him into critical condition. Do NOT open it!!!

I think that DOS mode is something like 700x480, or 640x400, something a bit weird like that.

You should be able to reset it somewhere in the On Screen Display menus.

Yeah, the CRT itself can act as one big capacitor, and give you a hell of a jolt, not to mention various capacitors on the circuit boards. Even after the CRT is discharged once, if left alone for awhile, it can build up a smaller, but still dangerous, charge. The effect is like a dying battery - a "dead" battery can be left alone for a short time, during which the chemicals inside can produce a decent voltage again.

If you want pics of just any monitor, not this specific one, behold: the insides of my Nokia 445Pro as it was opened for repairs.

Should I try to bring it somewhere for repairs? Would there be any possiblity that I would need to have a low resolution for something and this might be a problem in the future. I cant really think of any now. What do you think I should do?

Ah, ok. 404 Humor not found. Please try again later.....pinging again....Humor found. :)
Better get a UPS though if it's a webcam - otherwise, when the circuit breaker trips, the PC would shut down.

Did you check the OSD for any Factory Reset options?

In the A+ guide dealy I read, servicing a monitor (which I doubt you could fix anyways) involves unplugging it for a few days, making sure you're NOT grounded, shorting some part with an insulated handled screwdriver, waiting a day, doing it again, etc etc.

And if you jack it up, you roll a D20. 19-20, you live.
