It's an old Gateway2000 (remember that name?) monitor, 17", and blury as all heck..

I need something new, my brother got a 19" Viewsonic about a year ago and looking at his compared to mine shows such a difference in clarity and brightness. My monitor on the other hand, change resolutions and you need to manualy adusust the screen width, size, position, etc, in order for it to fill out the display. New monitors don't need that right? It's all automatic?

Yeah, so, $300.. what can that get me? Something bigger and better then what I have?

An analog 17-18'' LCD? that should give you 1280x1024 resolution churned out by most 19'' CRT displays.

not really. you can get a pretty nice 17" in the $300 range if you shop around a little.

LordJezo,I guess it comes down to which one you prefer ,TFT or CRT? Anyway CRT wise the new 19" LG F900P Flatron
looks good ,not sure what the US price is.

I say go with the LCD, unless you want it for gaming (which i assumed isn't the case from your current situation)

Text on a bad LCD monitior is so sweet in comparison to crt's

Back when I got a POC 15" (for $500 and discussion with a manager at cusa) The clarity was enough that it was more than worth it. You can sit infront of an lcd way longer than you can infront of a crt and experience no eyestrain.

Then again, for a gaming LCD be ready to cough up quite a pretty penny

Lots of undetermined variables, hard to make a recommendation. The previously recommended 900nf is a terrific monitor, but you may not need its high res capabilities unless you're doing serious graphics. Any of the Samsungs are good value for the money, although their low end models aren't really what you want.

I've become partial to the flat screen models- either the 753df or 955df are very good. They also have some new models like the 957 and 765mf, which I haven't tried, but are definitely in your budget... Viewsonic also makes good stuff for the money... I wouldn't expect any new monitor to last 10 years, though, they're usually dead in 4~5 years. Don't make 'em like they used to...

For $300 you could get a reasonable 17" TFT but you also have the option of a mid to high end 21" Monitor...got the space???

You can get a MAG 19" for around $200 if they still sell them at Best Buy. A 19" monitor must be around $30.00 just to ship it. I have had one for 1 year or so and really like it. I was thinking about buying a new one for X-Mas or right after that when I get my Tax money.

If you wanted a 19" CRT, I would say to check out the NEC FE991SB. I find many people like it, especially on Newegg and it can be had for $240-$260 (shipping is included in that cost) on Newegg and Dell. I am going to buy that one in a little while and I find that people on here recommend it as well. My other choice would probably be the Sony CPD-E440/Black because it is $300 at most sites and has some pretty nice features. I have also seen it in a store and it looked very nice.
