My MIC doesnt work in windows xp..do i need driver?

I have a compaq MV520 w/ built-in MIC and am using windows xp......it doest work when i record on sound recorder.....when i got to volume adjustment......i can adjust volume but balance bar is greyed out........also in control panel, under sounds and audio devices, under sound recording, the advanced for mic is greyed out , but it says that the default device is VIA Audio.........using asus a7v133 with audio '97 integrated sound card............do i need a driver?

also do u have to install the VIA 4in1 drivers for Windows XP?

you sure it has a built in mic? try plugging one in

That monitor has a built in mic, but you still need to hook a mic cable between it and your computer. Maybe you already did that, I don't know?

no its connected.........it wont work.........i tried another mic that is external........it still does same thing.
