My Maxtor makes this "wheeeeezing" sound everytime i start my comp...

Ok, i have a Maxtor DiamondMAx60+ 20gb IDE HD. Havent had any problems with it, infact im quite pleased with it, it's fast and quiet......FOR THE MOST PART.

This has been happening ever since the first few weeks of owning my new comp. When i sart the system, after its been off for a while, the HD will make this long wheeeezing sound, sorta sounds like it's whining or something, then the sound will slowly die off after a few mins and never come back. I find it kinda annoying and wierd. Anyone else experience this with thier Maxtor's? I dont think the drive is dying or anything like that cause it's not a clunking type of noise...

The reason i ask this is because im going to be adding a new HD soon, and am considering between IBM and another Maxtor (they're cheap). And if the added Maxotr is going to also be amking this noise, then ill go with IBM.

Sounds like:

1) You have "stiction" affecting your drive.
2) The drive motor is dying.

Yeah, I'd call Maxtor and try to get a replacement. Doesn't sound "normal."

My maxtor DM+40 has an odd sound to it as well, its kind of a squeaking/clunking sound whenever its turned on or off, I haven't been too concened about it becuase it sounds normal after that

All of my Maxtors do that, and I think it's just the drive getting up to speed, where the frequency of the noise becomes so high that's inaudible.

The problem is not stiction because then the drive wouldn't spin or would require multiple tries to get started. Stiction has largely been solved by making the platter surfaces rough in the head landing zone, and some of the newest drives, like Maxtor's budget line and IBM Travelstars and 75GXP and 60GXP series completely eliminate stiction because the heads never touch the platters.

It's possible that the drive motor or a chip that drives it is dying, but another possibility is that the computer power supply is developing a weak capacitor. But I doubt it.

I had 3 maxtors, all of them started making that noise and clunk sound when shutting down after a year or so, then started developing bad sectors after a while... get ibm, and throw your maxtor away.
