I just got a 7800gs with the "7-series" nvidia drivers but the highest resolution I can see in the nvidia control panel as well as display settings is 1280x1024 (1280x720 widescreen). I am plugged in via DVI and I'm reading that it is a limitation of DVI? Is that right? Even in games like WoW my fps is not much improved over my old Radeon 9800pro and the resolution is the same as well - 1280x720. Something has to be wrong here.

One other factor may be my monitor (Syntax Olevia 27" which has stated max 1280x720 XGA widescreen) Does it come into play for both game & desktop resolution options? I ask because my 9800pro (or its drivers) used to show me a lot higher resolution options for desktop display at least and they worked. I have not been able to find drivers for the monitor.

1) DVI vs. VGA?
2) monitor drivers a factor?
3) game resolution max? why the same fps?
4) desktop resolution max?

The new drivers didn't help. :(

It's an AMD 2800+ with 1GB RAM... video card is still AGP... yes it's dated but I expected some improvement for fps coming from a 9800pro at least. Max res isn't a huge problem - I'd just like to see some return on investment for the video card.

I'm confused - it looks like you are using a 720p LCD HDTV as your display, which is going to have a max resolution of around 1280x720. Why do you think you should be able to set it higher, and what would even be the point since your TV would just have to scale it back down?

Hit it right on the head. If the monitor has a max resolution of **x** then the highest resolution you set on the GPU is **x**

1280x720 (or the non-widescreen equivalent:1280x1024) is the highest you will achieve

another limiting factor in your lack of performance increase I'm guessing is your CPU - IIRC the 2800+ AMD cpu you're likely on is a T-Bird based Socket A Sempron with a clock speed of 2.0ghz and running on 256kb of L2 cache

I remember my 3000+ Socket A Sempron was one of a very few Socket A Semprons to have 512kb of L2

But your resolution settings would be only showing your "allowable" settings - you can change it and have it show the "unsupported" resolutions

Ok, understood on the resolution. Is 1GB RAM not a contributing factor to my low FPS at all? I would like to see some gain and that's just about the only piece left I'd upgrade on this machine. Going 1GB --> 2GB.
