Whats the best way to transfer the stuff?

Assuming you're running some flavor of Windows; open Explorer windows for SSD/HDD, select/cut files & libraries on SSD then copy to HDD. If you've got games/apps on or SSD you will have to reinstall them to the D-drive.

If you're on Win7 or greater, TRIM support will recover the space on the SSD. Win XP needed a patch.

you can create symbolic link for some large folder on SSD and have it point to some directory on the HDD
if you have bunch of steam games, you can create new library on the different drive as well - that should be simplest migration

Not sure how symlinks is simpler than simple copy/paste...

All depends on what he wants to move, which needs to be specified. In Windows you can add folders to your libraries, if you use libraries, or move your My Docs etc folders.
If it's Steam, then Symlinks might be the best option (not the simplest), if it's other stuff, who knows.

What's wrong with plain old drag and drop using Explorer? You can do entire folders.
