My local Papa Johns is WAY too greasy.

Out of the big 3 (PapaJohns, Pizzahuy, and Dominos) PJ's is the best. And yes I have had the new Dominos and it was awful.

There are smaller places that have great pizza but are not close or part of it is great but one part not so much.

Have you tasted the new Dominoes pizza??? It's infinitely better than it was before. Also didn't know Little Caesars was national.

Now that I think about it I haven't really tried the new dominoes, so I'll have to give it a shot and rejudge laters.

Weird.

The Papa Johns nearby has amazing pizza
Same.

Based on other Papa Johns I've ordered from, especially the one in the town where I went to college, I can see why people hate it. But I guess the one right down the road from me has good management or something because they are incredible.

<cue no chain makes good pizza>
Plenty of good pizza shops in the small city that I used to live in.
Since opening, a pizza hut has gone out of business, a Little Caesar's has gone out of business. A new LC has opened up about 15 years later, but it always looks slow when I drive by there. Rarely see Domino's cars going by - they do a decent amount of delivery business, apparently to people who want to stay home and use coupons. Not pizza, but Quiznos went out of business too.

Meanwhile, (in alphabetical order) A.J.'s, Napoli, Renna's, and Tasta Pizza all do a hell of a lot of business. Even for the most cookie cutter type of pizza, Dave's was pretty good. Dave retired, new owner. That fool apparently thought it was a good idea to close the place for a couple months to remodel, and to change the name, losing a lot of the customer base to the other local shops.

Never had Papa Johns, is it roughly the same as Dominos?

But as hinted in DrP's thread above, the chains can't seem to touch the regular mom and pop pizza joints

This thread makes me long for the good pizza joints on the east coast (New York specifically)...and NONE of them are chains. I've had all the chain pizza and none of it even comes close to comparing to good pizza.

I've tried all of the big chain pizza places, and none of them can stand up to the good local pizza joints that are in most towns and cities.

What is it with people that insist on eating at the big chain restaurants (not just pizza but the Red Robins, TGIF, Olive Garden, etc. etc.) rather than take a chance on a local independent restaurant?

I use Yelp or some source of restaurant reviews source to get an idea and have found lots of really good food in much more interesting places.

Problem is until you try you may get one thats even worse then Dominos, as hard as that is to believe.

There is one place in DC that has the best toppings and sauce but the dough/bread is not that good. If not for the flavor of the sauce i would not get. But damm the sauce, chesse, and toppings just make up for it.

But I have eaten others and whondered how they stayed open.

Same reason people will stop for a McDonalds then a reg local food shop. They know what they will get. I have had some really bad food from local places and great food.

out of all the pizza chains around here, papa johns is the only edible pizza. sux that yours is too greasy

PJ is the best now that Pizza Hut decided to go "healthy" and substitute dry cardboard as their bread.

I have to echo this - local places are extremely hit or miss, usually miss. "Homemade sauce" is exactly what I could make at home most times. Besides, local places aren't exactly cheaper. We have good pizza in NY but even so I do 50/50 local vs. chain depending on the mood... chains aren't bad, at least not PJ.

Interesting...I think I've had that problem with every Papa Johns. Pretty nasty stuff..was a great value in college though.

ProTip: When you make your own pizza, and you damn well should, at least once or thrice in your life, put the pepperoni on paper towels in the microwave and microwave them for a few seconds, the fat will render out and get soaked into the paper towels. Then put them on the pizza before sticking in the oven.

You're lucky to have such good pizza places in your area. Some people aren't as lucky, and this is why people think Papa Johns or whatever is good. Hell, if there were more good mom and pop pizza places here, I would go there for pizza.

What sux is that people will go for the chain pizza, which really does suck, instead of going out of your way to find some decent pizza that you may have to drive to pick up.

Seriously, papa johns really does suck...seriously.

I had Pizza Hut a few days ago and it was awesome. I usually hate Pizza hut here in Hawaii, but we moved recently to a new apartment/condo. There is a small Pizza hut carry-out place near our new place. A friend ordered some pizza (New Yorker pizza) from there when he was over...it was good!

I can drive an hour to get what you'd probably consider a good pizza. PJ kills the local places. I've had the supposed best pizza in California and I thought PJ while different, isn't bad compared to it. My friend went to Brooklyn, which is probably the pizza capital of the US. He said they have something like 30 Pizza Huts, and it's not even a very big city. I honest would take a stuffed crust from PH right up with any M&P place I've had. If chains were so bad I doubt 30 could survive in one of the pizza meccas of the US. People there don't have to go further than a block or 2 to find 2 or 3 M&P spots. So it's not like PH is staying in business because there's nowhere else around to get pizza.

I grew up in NY and have family there who I visit from time to time and when I visit we always go to the same pizza joint for the best pizza you've never had. We have to drive about 20 minutes from my sister's house to get this pizza and it is well worth the drive. I wouldn't drive to my neighbor's house for papa johns pizza and I sure as fuck would bother to have it delivered.

There aren't many decent pizza places in SoCal, and they don't hold a candle to the great east coast pizza places I know of, but they are still worth the drive vs the shit they serve at papa johns. I really hate that place.

I have some really great local pizza near me but local pizza's anywhere is usually a crapload more expensive and it's not like the chains are horrible unless you're a snob. Also you know how good or bad a national chain is going to be. Local chains can be great sometimes and downright crappy other times .
