What case and power supply are you planning to use?

I still have one of those Rosewill $22 AP FS FBM-01/02 cases left, and some asst. PSUs that I've bought previously left. (An ARK Technology "520W", really probably a 300W, and some better-quality NAXN 450W PSUs. The ARK Tech. was like $12-13 + $6-7 ship, and the NAXN was like $35 with free ship.)

Thats because AMD X4 and X6 have better Single Thread Performance then the FX line. In a lot of cases the Top Tier X6 when overclocked will absolutely destroy even FX8xxx series CPU in both Single and Multi threaded programs.Heck even better at gaming most of the time.

This misconception is probably what keeps the price of old thubans up.

Agreed, an overclocked Vishera Octocore leaves an overclocked Phenom II X6 in the dust at everything. Thubans hit a brick wall way too fast when overclocking.... In comparsion, it is generally not difficult to get a full 1 Ghz overclock on a Vishera.

Just look at the synthetics (Passmark):
Phenom X6 1100T = 5847 Overall, 1259 Single Threaded
AMD FX 8370 = 8980 Overall, 1520 Single Threaded

Virtual Larry, I wonder if the AMD HSF being so much easier to remove/install than the Intel HSF would aid the installation of a 3.5" HDD in the 3.5" bay of that case:

Actually its not a misconception.. Here is a 500 Mhz higher clocked Fx4350@4.2Ghz vs a X4 980@3.7Ghz and the X4 980 kicks its ass..
Scaling does much better while overclocking per core on the X4 and X6's Vs the FX Line.

Scaling does much better while overclocking per core on the X4 and X6's Vs the FX Line.

The only way a Thuban still looks good is by excluding the FX octocores. An FX octocore will stomp the floor with any Thuban.

Lets see some proof clock for clock.. Here is a X6 100Mhz lower then an FX8320 and the X6 won ever time in every benchmark. FX cant keep up with Thurban after a 4.0Ghz clock for clock match up plain and simple..

Just another subjective comparison. Previously, I had installed Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon 64-bit on my Haswell G1820 Celeron dual-core 2.7Ghz rigs, and I was comparing Windows 10 64-bit on the A4-3420 OCed to 3.15Ghz.

Now, with Win7 64-bit on the Haswell Celeron, and web browsing this forum without NoScript, I think that the AMD FM1 APUs, at least overclocked, compare VERY favorably.

I'm getting a similar experience with the Haswell Celeron G1820, at 2.7Ghz and using the Intel iGPU, to the A4-3420 @ 3.15Ghz.

So, it's all good. I just need some basic web-browser box customers now.

I may keep the Haswell G1820 rigs for myself, now that I was able to fit the DTX mobo into an ITX case that I like.

Hmmm, doesn't sound like to me you're exiting the FM1 market just yet. We welcome you here. Are you in IDE or AHCI mode for 3.15GHz?

Try 106 at AHCI mode, and what difference in performance you're getting? Also, you can set memory RAM to auto at 1600MHz, which brings it up to 1705MHz safely. This is your best setting.

Yeah, right.... Keep telling yourself that. I've owned both. The FX-8320 cut rendering times by 20% - 30% across the board versus my previous overclocked Phenom X6 1055T. My FX also manages about 5000 points more per day on the World Community Grid versus the Thuban X6. Some people never want to give up this urban legend, but Thuban's days of having the performance crown are long behind it. There is no way a Thuban hex outmuscles the Vishera octocores in today's software. Zambezi, sure.... But the majority of Zambezi's flaws were fixed with Vishera.

Would make a nice set of RAM for these LLano rigs.

The Vishera keeps the same or better frames in almost everything, and 4.2Ghz is barely even an overclock for vishera.

Agreed. As someone that owned both -- I will admit that the Vishera is a little mediocre at base clock. But start overclocking and Thuban starts to lag pretty much across the board.

It's probably all a moot point at this late date -- looking at the architecture for Zen..... Zen will probably leave both of them in the dust.

Well, I had the Bclk at 112 with the Kingston, and might have had the memfreq set in BIOS at 667.

I tried the Vcolor with 1866 (933 memfreq) at stock, seemed to work. Unfortunately, the vcolor at 1600 (800 memfreq) and Bclk 110 was still unstable, even if I really loosened the primary timings.

It seems stable at 1333 (667 memfreq) and 112 bclk. Actual memfreq works out to like 748.

I hated to dredge up this old thread, but I just wanted to point out that I installed the newest build of CloudReady 64-bit (ChromiumOS) onto an A4-3420, that was overclocked slightly to 106 FSB, with a 16GB SSD I got off of ebay for $9 shipped, in AHCI mode, and YouTube 1080P@30 VP plays wonderfully on it. With a single 8GB DDR3-1866 @ 1600, but with the FSB OC, more like 1866 again. Memory timings were manual 11-11-11-36-2T, I think.

1080P @ 60 VP9 stutters occasionally though, enough to be annoying. Unless that my 30Mbit/sec internet causing that, or the SSD's slow random-write speeds. (0.1MB/sec)

I just ordered a A6-3670K today for $20 shipped. Prices have dropped down enough to justify purchasing one. It will be paired with ECS A55F-M4 V2.0 board, the only FM1 board with secure-boot feature for Windows 10. Will let you know the results.
