My Linksys Switch will not work with XBOX Live

How come this is? When I plug the Cat5 Cable in all three lights are on and then all three flash and come back on and off. When I try to do XBOX Live directly through the cable modem it works like a charm, but not through the switch. I don't need a router do I? Do I need to update the firmware on the switch? There is no firewall on the switch so that couldn't be the problem. I have tried the cable and that works fine. Its just a simple Linksys four port switch. I'm confused. Any suggestions/comments are welcome. Thank you for reading.

Hmmm... did you try a different cable? When I had xbox live I ran it through a switch and then to a router and had no problems at all with it. The cable would be about the only thing off the top of my head that I could think of if it works fine to the router. Hopefully someone else can come up with a better answer, but you really shouldn't have problems going to a switch first.

let me get this straight...

You have your cable modem plugged into a switch along with your pc and xbox and are trying to use both?

If that is the case, then yes, you do need a router.

Yep. Sounds to me like your problem is that you don't have a router.

I third this quote.

The cheap fix for this problem:

Install a second NIC in your computer, hook the cable modem up to one, and plug the XBOX, either with a crossover cable or through the switch you have to the second network card and enable ICS on it. This will work for you but you will need to have your computer on to play on Live. If you do not have an extra NIC laying, do not go buy one. If you have to buy one, do yourself a favor, do it right and get a router. It will cost you a little bit extra, but a router would allow you to play on Live without having your computer on, and provide you some level of protection from the outside. Well worth it.

EDIT: I just saw that CompUSSR has a D-Link 2.4b wi-fi router for 59.99 - $10 IR - $40 MIR = 9.99. Good price.

Thank you guys...I will get a router. But a quick question. Why is it that the XBOX will not work along with the two computers? If I were to unplug the two computers fromt he switch and just have the XBOX hooked up to it then would it work? Isn't the XBOX still receiving an IP address just like normal, just doesn't have NAT like a router would? Thanks again.

One of the ports on the Linksys switch is reserved for a crossover link. Make sure your not plugging your cable into this port. I think the port is labeled uplink.

Oh... now I see what the real problem was. I think you are gonna have problems trying to go from the modem to the switch out to a few computers because I assume your particular modem doesn't have a DHCP pool to assign multiple addresses. Either way, the router will make your life better and it will work for sure... Some decent router deals coming up on black friday too!
