my lil brother RUINED MY CAR!

ok. he said my car was due for a transmission fluid change. so i let him. i drive it around and notice a weird whistling noise. my lil brother notices it too and see's there is too much transmission fluid, so he drains a lil bit. he says my car is now fine to drive. so i take it to see my friend in Ashburn, VA, who's at home on break from college. i already graduated, and she's still there. hadn't see her in 1 year so i thought why not fun for new years right?

well i passed ikea on the left on the interstate and i'm like yayy ikea! i'll go by there later to look at a computer desk i like cause i want a bigger one so i have space for my scanner and printer i have now. then my car starts making all kinds of noises. taking my foot off the gas makes the car make a noise that sounds like the same noise a wind up flashlight works (with the handle u turn to charge it). not quite as high a pitch but similar. i know its my transmission.

since i was almost to my friend's i figured i'd go ahead and get there because i think it maybe my car just needs a break and i don't want to turn right around and drive it for 2 1/2 more hours, i just drove it for almost 2 1/2 already. so i get there and hang out withher and then leave and rent a hotel room cause its late and i'm a lil lost (got lost while looking for a hotel room).

so i drive the car back yesterday morning and its starting to rattle more. after driving for awhile i come to a light. when it turns green hitting the gas makes the car rattle real bad and the rattle mostly goes away once i hit 40 mph. so i'm hoping if i don't stop much i'll be ok.

so i get almost all the way home and the car is rattling really bad now when i try to hit the gas and then it completely dies. the engine just revs but its not turning the wheels. i hope my transmission isn't completely ruined ya know? someone gives me a ride home and my lil brother comes and tows it slowly to the house with a thick rope and the truck.

i have a chilton car book for my 92 toyota tercel 4 dr 2wd, automatic. the idiot lil brother didn't bother to consult the book before he changed my fluid???

he tells me after reading it that my car drains all the transmission fluid from one plug, but that it has to be filled up in two separate plugs. so basically that whistling noise is cause 1/2 of my transmission has no fluid! empty space! wtf!!!.

he's hoping all he has to do is add more transmission fluid and it will lubricate it and it will work okay. i don't know. anyone got any ideas? the car still rattles some but it has zero power. engine starts fine. i'm hoping thats all it needs but i dunno. i drove the car about 300 miles with transmission fluid only in 1/2 the places it was supposed to be. if u all think it is ruined (the transmission) how much will it cost to fix it, or get one used and put on? i hope not much. i'm trying to save up to move out of the state 🙁. i really don't need this setback.

also should my lil brother pay for a new one if this is whats wrong with the car? he didn't do the job right, and yes i paid him like $40 to do it.

what an incompentent fool 🙁

Beat the all loving crap out of your brother, and make him buy you a new tranny if needed. It'll be expensive as hell too.

Yup, trannies are expensive as hell.

I think you bear some responsibility for this as well.

Why? His brother implied that he was competent for the job, and even took his money. It's completely the brother's fault.

This is why you don't want to do business with family.

First off, your screwed. You WILL be buying a new tranny, maybe not now but VERY soon. Start saving NOW.

Secondly, trannies aint cheap. Expect to drop $1500 on one. More or less depending, but thats a good ballpark number. If you find a refurbished one it will be a bit cheaper.

Thirdly and lastly, kick your little bro's everloving ass.

Oh, forthly and lastly lastly, I'm suprised it made it that far!

@_@ i thought when you change tranny fluids, you use up like gallons of it? I thought after you drain the old fluid, you add in new fluid, turn the engine for a bit. Drain. Fill in new fluid, turn on engine for a bit...

Drain. Full in new fluid... etc... until the drained fluid is clear.

Just go to something like a chop shop and find a used tranny that works. Go to an Asian place to get it fixed. Tell them you want nothing new or fancy, used parts is fine with you.

No.

You drain and then refill. But you really should read the manual on how to do it. Some cars you just fill it to the line, some cars you need to set the brake and put the car in gear then check it, just depends on the car.

*EDIT*
You might be thinking of a tranny flush. 2 different things, those.

Your Tranny died. Same thing happened to my old Jetta. Hose blew and I didnt know it, all the tranny fluid leaked out.

Sorry, I know it sucks 🙁

Can't he just bury him/her in the back yard or something? Trannies aren't that hard to come by if you hang around the right bars

yep, as the above posters claim, you have lost out in life. Only decent advice I can give is to go to a scrap yard to try to source a second hand tranny, but you're still going to have to install it (unless your brother can - he sounds like a decent mech) which will cost a pretty penny. plus you'll have an old box in there too...

Best of luck + post updates when you solve this one way or another.

Or is this some kind of prank thread? I struggle to believe how dumb people are sometimes... How'd he even know which oil to use without using the manual?

but there was no fluid!???

You obviously knew your brother wasn't sure what he was doing. A transmission is a very expensive and important piece to mess up. You shouldn't have let him do that.

That said make him pay for at least part of it. Enjoy your new tranmission.

my lil brother said he didn't know how to put another transmission in. and no its not a prank 🙁. what sucky way to start off my new year 🙁

yep, no fluid will kill your transmisison.. imagining gears rubbing on each other without any lub... they will wear out, remember all the noises you heard? that's your transmission dying.

Please. I don't care who the mechanic is, when you suspect a car problem you don't "since i was almost to my friend's i figured i'd go ahead and get there because i think it maybe my car just needs a break and i don't want to turn right around and drive it for 2 1/2 more hours" He drove at least 100 miles after he realized there was a problem.

His brother is responsible for the damage from 'discovery + 3 miles' in my book.

So basically what happened is you guys filled it to level and checked it with the engine shut off right? It needs to be checked with the engine running and warmed up - and the trans shifted through all the ranges before you pull the stick. You probably checked it with it shut off, which resulted in a high fluid level on the stick and you thought some had to be drained. So you drained it, and now the front pump on the trans is starving for fluid - it's losing line pressure and the trans at first started chattering, and now it's slipping altogether. The whining you heard is probably the front pump. Top it off - you might get lucky. Those Toyota transmissions are pretty tough.

In any event, there isn't 2 plugs to fill it by. Just the dipstick. If there's oil in the pan, then the front pump picks it up and pressurizes the whole trans.

Unless he drained the fluid from the differential as well - and I can't think of any reason in the world why anybody would do that...

Did he pull the trans pan, or just a plug?

I mean he didn't just get under there and started pulling drain plugs right? If so, I wouldn't ever let him anywhere near your car again.
