My IT position will be closing out, what certifications should I consider to increase my employment options

I'll probably need to find a new job in the next 3-6 months (maybe sooner) and I want to be able to market myself a little better than the competition. So basically I'm considering getting certified in a few areas. I've already decided that Unix will be one of the things I'd like to add to my resume but I think it would also help me if I got certifications in other areas as well.

Currently I'm a Sys Admin/Senior Tech/Application Tester for about 300-400 NT workstations connected to several Unix servers. I'm thinking that since I'm familiar with NT and hardware that maybe I should get my certifications in those disciplines first. But I have'nt really kept up with what tests I need to take.


Can someone point me to or share some information on industry IT certs

Do a search for help wanted in the fields that you are interested in and see what type of certs are being desired.

When you say NT you mean nt4 or 2k, because you can't certify in nt4 any longer, I'm not very familiar with unix certs but I've done MS and working on cisco now.

I believe that Microsoft is bringing back the NT4 certs.
IIRC my tutor mentioned it in Server class last week, not sure if there is any truth in though.

Sounds highly unlikely, they stopped selling and I think are cutting support for it as well if I remember correctly, maybe the tutor was referring to the nt4 people keep the certification instead of getting retired?

I would go for ( Net + ) certification if I were you, to at least have a certificate on hand. It should be an easy enough cert for you, and won't take much time. Always study before you go of course.....also I would look into getting ( CCNA ) though its rather hard to study for and the industry is looking more towards it instead of MCSE.

Daniel - I agree, I did a search and I think he may have got his wires crossed (see link)... either that or he is just being hopeful. (He is more confident teaching NT than 2000 ) Although I did see mention of a new NT 4 Server exam for MCSE.
