My ISP says I can't set up a server, but.....

I am not allowed to set up a server on my cable connection (COX cable).
Do they monitor traffic to see if someone does it anyway?

OMG YES. Cox is anal about it. I uncapped my modem and set it way higher, and they called me the next day asking If my cable were ok...SO I turned it back down....

You can get in deep shyt man, its considered stealing bandwidth..

I have heard of cases where too much upload is coming from 1 person all the time, and they shut him off or cap him, so I assume they monitor traffic to some extent.

I doubt it.... basically the upload is capped so slow that you can't really make much of a server from it anyway.

Its not just traffic, but its not unheard of for an isp to check to see if certain ports are open on your machine (ie: 80 for web, 68 incase you're a knucklehead running a dhcp server on their network, etc)

well, in the license agreement, they say no web hosting, but I don't believe they say anything against FTP...so, what they did was block port 80 for you to use, but you can use port 21...So, you just can't use port 80 for web hosting.

For those of you requesting info on uncapping -

it is a long and boring process. Follow instructions carefully. Do not get caught.

REQUIRES MOTOROLA SURFBOARD MODEM

Also, whoever started the thread (lol I forgot), cox doesnt really limit you on your account webspace. I have all 14 of my 10mb spaces filled, and theyre always being leached and are under constant use. I dont see any way in hell that it could equal less than 300mb a month (this is the allowed bandwidth for monthly transfers)..

And yes, soybomb is very correct. Cox will ping your ass all day long. They scan ports 24/7. Just fire up zonealarm for a few mins and you'll see the same IP (cox's ping server apparently) pinging you countless times in a span of an hour...

Gah. Turn down Zone Alarm's protection so it's not complaining about DNS UDP packets.

"They scan ports 24/7" - No. Pings != port scans. And I'd bet money you turned Zone Alarm up so high it complains about every single DNS request you make. I take at least three calls a week about that. "I get port scans on port 53 every time I go to a website! It's from IP 68.xx.xx.30!" Congratulations, sir, you've discovered our DNS SERVERS!

I know plenty of people in Chandler running servers. They haven't had a word said to them in the 2+ years I've known them, and they're not exactly low bandwidth users.

Calm down, people. If you're really worried about it, feel free to block traffic from those IP addresses. You'll never see DHCP or DNS again, however. Have fun.

Well, just checked the traffic log of my Sygate firewall and COX is checking constantly!!
I have enough space without running a server here.

Why would you run a dhcp server?
What does that do to their service?

Right. You're either seeing other users, or you're logging your communication between yourself and the DNS/DHCP servers.

If you do run a server, you take a big risk of getting your connection yanked. I'd advise against it if it says no servers in their TOS.

This is an interesting question, as my understanding is that cable companies are concerned about bandwidth usage. The problem with enforcing a "no server" policy is that not all servers entail massive bandwidth usage (i.e. a private ftp server, ssh server, etc.)

I've thought about running a private FTP or SSH server on my machine for remote access. While this might be against the TOS, it doesn't affect the cable company because you aren't hogging bandwidth. One thing that I WILL NOT do is uncap my modem. I thought about it once, but realized that not only will it permanently get your connection yanked, but it could get you blacklisted so that you wouldn't be able to get any broadband at all. Definitely not cool.

Interesting...I checked my TOS and it said no:

Web, http, ftp, DHCP, game, or something else servers
and no VPN or tunneling.

Well, by doing a simple thing of creating a server for a game, you are breaking that, even for just a 2 person game....lol

<< and no VPN or tunneling >>

:Q

I use Charter, and while they don't allow HTTP, FTP, POP3 :)|), or game servers, they do allow VPN, as they should. They also allow SSH.

On a semi-related note, I found that they have an interesting way of enforcing the no game server rule. If I fire up a Quake 3 server on the default port, everyone will get a huge lag spike about 5 minutes into the game, but if I run it on a different port, all is well. Strange.
