3 months ago i got a 3rd party to replace the failing battery in the ipod. 3rd party battery was great because it lasted 20+ hours on a charge. than one day it just failed, it wouldnt charge up.

i let it sat for 3 months and decided to take apart my busted ipod today.

the ipod battery looks like this now.

all bloated and gaseous. looks really dangerous. i cant believe i was trying to charge this thing for 24 hours. now i need to find a local battery disposal center to get rid of this. i dont want it burning my house down.

my best guess is that its gassy because of bad chemistry inside the battery. NewTech is sending me a RMA next week. As soon as it gets here I'll toss this one.

All my late night research tells me that its extremely flammable and once it gets going it wll burn hot and heavy.

Its acid, it will disolve stuff, not blow up.

The outer packages of Li batteries are often made from a sort of metallic reinforced plastic. Inside the package you have a stack of foil electrodes and electrolyte.

It looks like some sort of failure in the battery has caused gas to build up inside the package.

There's no acid in a Li ion/Li polymer battery, but they can store a lot of energy and get extremely hot if they get short-circuited (externally, or internally, e.g. a nail penetrating the battery package), sometimes even catching fire.

Anyway, Li batteries are pretty non-toxic, so I'd just put it in with the household waste - just wrap it up with paper or something so it doesn't short out.
