I'm having this problem for some time now. After a while on the internet, it seems that my connection freezes. My downloads do not continue, I can't visit sites or get email.

The only solution is restart the computer OR turn the cable modem off and on again. It's annoying, because I can't leave my computer downloading stuff when I'm out or sleeping, anymore. Any help would be appreciated!! :)

If it helps, I'm using Windows XP SP1.

Thanks in advance!

Is your cable modem USB? If so then it's quite likely that it's a power issue - a lot of broadband USB modems draw so much power that onboard USB ports just can't cope and eventually the modem has to shut down.

There's not really any actual fix with this - make sure the latest BIOS and motherboard drivers are installed (it's a particular problem on VIA chipsets) or get a powered USB hub.

It's very variable - and seemingly random too - depends somewhat on how you're using the connection - it's worth trying with a powered hub to see if the problem goes away - at least then you know for sure. Other suggestions, although pretty obvious, include re-installing your cable adapter drivers (best to completely remove first) or removing all networking componants from Windows XP then re-run the internet connection wizard - which should ensure you have exactly the right config. Also, check forums for your model of cable adapter - if other people are having the same problem a solution may be floating about.

Update: I don't have to boot the computer or turn the modem off, the problem can be solved by pressing the button "Repair" in Network Connections/my connection/Support

It's still annoying, nonetheless.
