Uhm there is already a system to prevent ties when it actually matters.

The system is very similiar to what the NHL used to be, before it got butchered for ADHD fans and the point system got messed up.

maybe you should work on getting the NFL to end ties, first?

fact is, after group play and because this is a championship tournament, there are no ties. They've already solved the "problem" that you invented. ;)

Yeah, and people constantly complain about games being decided by penalty kicks. Just thinking outside the box here.

Yes, this. Very annoying.

I have a hard time grasping the concept in a penalty shoot-out that it all comes down to one person that will make or break the entire game. It all becomes whose goalie is better than the whole team combined.

No, it becomes whose goalie correctly guessed the direction to dive the most.

Not really. Penalty kicks are much more luck in guessing by the goalie. Yes there is some reading the other player and faking going on, but it's mostly luck on guessing where the goalie should jump to.

worst idea ever, you have obviously never played soccer.

i've never played soccer and i still think that's the worst idea. the prospects of that being abused is huge and would change the game completely

Without offsides rule you just have your fastest guys (forwards, strikers) beat the defenders in a sprint and feed them the ball for an easy score.

offsides rule makes scoring easier not harder. you just need to see why the rule was put into place.

because of what you mentioned above, teams become more defensive minded and will put as many defenders toward their goal during the game as possible. that'll lead to more low scoring games and even more 0-0 ties. with the offisides rule, the teams can treat that as a backup defender and will more likely send extra players on the attack opening up the game more.

its hard to understand when you are first watching the sport but this rule was made due to outside of box thinking.

They're playing soccer, so they should lose automatically. Both teams.

Seriously though - they should keep track of how many stupid pansy things each team does. Ya know where they get lightly tapped and the guy falls down and grabs the spot and acts like someone just cut off a leg. I say for every time that happens, you give the opposing team a point.

Then we'd have good basketball scores in soccer. Like 123-131

Close, but giving them a point is too extreme, and it doesn't consider the safety of the players. Instead, any player that goes down for an injury is out for the rest of the game. We don't want them to continue playing, as that might make the injury worse. Thus, the best solution is if you fall down with an injury, you are out of the game. If you faked it, too bad. If your team runs out of players, too bad.

For tournament play, I would prefer a system like this to the current shootout scenario. It's like deciding a basketball game based on a free throw competition.

Soccer actually has the best method to break ties. You just arnt seeing it until knockout stage.

Footballs sudden death sux ass and is purely for corporations who have get get their next show on.

I say this as a person who would rather watch either paint dry or grass grow than watch soccer.

and yet people still bitch about it.

I'm simply pointing out that Spidey should be less concerned about a game that he obviously doesn't care about and likely knows very little about, and to instead focus his energy on a game that he likely does care about.

Can't stand the tie. It's a sport, a game, there needs to be a winner and a loser. So I propose the following suggestions:

1) Each team loses a man every 10 minutes after end of regulation on any play stoppage, no substitutions allowed, period. True sudden death. Repeat every 10 minutes.

Or to make it a little more interesting:

2) Coin flip decides which team loses a man first. At end of regulation coin flip losers lose a man, after 5 minutes into sudden death other team loses a man. Repeat until decided every 5 minutes, no substitutions allowed.

Workable or am I smoking crack?

you do realize. there are things like golden goal, 2 extra times and penalty kicks.

I played all they way up till I graduated high school, just wasn't good enough for college and watch as much world cup as I can. I just thought it was a neat idea because I don't like the ties.

Never understood the "need" for a Winner/Loser. For deciding the Champion, sure, but for anything less a Tie is perfectly acceptable and a reflection of the Real World.
