As the topic says, I think my IBM 30GB 75gxp is on its last legs. Within the past week the drive has started to make some weird ass noises and has problems boting into Windows. What are some good hard drives out now besides IBM. I'm looking for something around 40-60GB, ULTRA ATA100, and somewhere around $100. I found this Maxtor on Newegg, but really don't know very much about their product line. I need something that will be RELIABLE!

MAXTOR 60GB 7200RPM Model # 6L060J3 - OEM, DRIVE ONLY 3.5 inch DIAMONDMAX PLUS D740X Series Ultra ATA/133 2mb Cache Buffer 8.5ms Average Seek Time - 3 Year Manufacturer Warranty - 60.0 gb 7200 rpm. Model#: MX6L060J3 $101.00

Also how do I go about sending my IBM drive back to get a new one? I know plenty of people have gone through this on here before but I have no clue.
Thanks

send it back to IBM. ask them to give you an upgrade (since the 60's and 75's had problems). they will send you a 120GXP drive. the 120's are awsome drives. other than that overpriced westerndigital drive the 120's are the fastest ide drives around.

Call up IBM, get an RMA number and return it. Ask for a better drive. Either keep it or sell it and buy something different.

Try the Seagate Baracuda IV drives, very quiet and reliable but not as fast as the IBM, WD or Maxtor. If you want speed, try the WD or Maxtor.

I have the 60GB model of the Maxtor drive you mentioned, and I'm very pleased, and I'm running my old 75GXP 30GB as a storage drive now, still running great *knock on wood*, but I think you can't really go wrong with Maxtor.

Personally, I like Seagate better. You can get a 60GB Seagate for $103 from NewEgg. They are almost dead silent, and have proved very very reliable.

yea, but a 120GXP beats the seagate barracuda IV in performance tests. plus, the 120gxp's are more reliable than the 75/60's.

Yeah, you might have some luck with getting a 120gxp, my 75gxp 45gb was clicking rather badly, sent in for an rma and got back a brand new 60gxp 60gb....
