My HP Laptop makes too much noise

Seriously, its LOUD!!

Here's the specs, just in case:

2.4GHz P4 Northwood 533FSB
512MB (2x256) PC2100 RAM
40GB Hard Drive
15" SXGA+ TFT

blah blah blupity blah blablah


ANYWAYS, I have an Antec Notebook Cooler under the laptop, but still, the thing makes TOO MUCH noise

Keep in mind, the only things I'm doing on this laptop are:

Word Processing
Internet/E-Mail/AIM

And the occasional small video edit (taking advantage of the IEEE1394 port)
 
Or you could get a laptop cooler! ;P That is why the fans are going, but there aren't any mods or anything like that that I know of. I don't know how much quieter laptop cooler pads are though either.
 
Hello Amol,

I've got a Compaq (of course HP) Presario R3116, which is probably on a similar chassis. My machine is'nt too loud though despite having seperate suck and blow fans - i've heard worse from Toshiba and Dell laptops.

The only things I can suggest are to clean the dust out of the fans underneath and perhaps increase the distance from the underside of the laptop and the surface that you are using it on (stick bigger feet underneath) it might reduce the noise slightly.

The real reason of course for the racket is the fact that the processor is a desktop version (like mine) so it will always suffer from heat issues... The only advantages with using a desktop processor in a notebook is speed - its slightly quicker.

For what you are using it for, it may be too high-spec! You could always sell it and get a Mobile processor based machine with a Pentium M or Mobile Athlon processor.

yeah, but sholdn't the fans control their speed or something

like, if i start opening a lot of apps, then i know that the CPU will work harder and the fans will start going faster

but when i leave the computer on and all i am running is one window of AIM, the fans dont slow down . . .

yeah, i guess i'll do that, the warranyt ends feb 12th or something (bought it 2/12/2003)

i guess cleaning, new fans, new HSF
 
the laptop makes noise when the system is hot. the reason why it runs hotter over time is because dust builds up inside the system. therefore, a blanket of dust is layered up inside the notebook and traps heat. i suggest you blowing it all out once in a while. this happens to all laptops. i have an hp ze 4600 and my sis has a dell notebook also. compressed air does wonders.
 
Are you able to change your Speedstep/power settings?
I think it's called Speedstep...on the A64s, it's called PowerNow! (with the exclamation).

I have the eMachines m6809 and I am able to enable throttling by going into Power settings in Control Panel and switching between the "Always On" and the "Portable/Laptop" descriptions.

The fans turning on and off are even more noticeable for me.
 
Make sure it's really the fans. Some notebook drives get heat-damaged and end up making a ton of noise that could be mistaken for fan noise.
 
borrowed a can of compressed air from the neighbors, right now the fans are (relatively) quiet (i can still hear them, but not as loud as b4)

anyways, i'll see if it really was dust . . .

if it goes back to b4, then i'll just send it to get the HSF and all replaced
