my honda accord says to 'check fuel cap'....

this may sound simple but my accord says to check the fuel cap, I did, tightened it pretty good and still says it, anybody know what else could be wrong? the car is only 2 months old. thnks

Did it 'click' twice when you tightened it? I think if you don't turn it enough it will throw up that error...I think that's how my Ridgeline works...

The gas tank must be under pressure for the fuel injection to work properly. Do you hear a pressure let off sound when you open the lid? Maybe the lid is cracked.

Did you first remove the cap, then reinstall it, turning it until it clicks?
You may have to do that rather than just turning it some more.
To get rid of that message, you will likely have to reset your cars "Computer" to clear this error code.
Easiest way is to disconnect the Negative battery cable, usually for several, if not up to, 30 minutes.
(When you re-connect, You'll have to reset your Radio Stations, Clock, etc.)

If you have a Haynes manual for your specific model, it will give you more detailed, (and possibly more simplified) instructions for resetting it.

You may have to drive for a little while, but it should reset itself.

If the gas cap is tightened properly, most cars will reset error codes after restarting 2-4 times (varies on the car) with the error not present. Give that a try

MY truck has this happen this weekend, didnt tighten the gascap tight enough and the message didnt go away so checked the manual and said i needed to press the odometer reset a couple times to make it go away.

What the hell are you talking about,this has to do with OBDII emissions,it has nothing to do with the fuel injection system,the pressure sensor has detected that either the gas cap is not tightened all the way,it is defective or there is a open breach in the canister purge system.
This is to prevent fuel vapors from entering the atmoshere,here's what you do,shut off the vehicle,wait 15 minutes,unscrew the gas cap,reinstall the cap making sure that it "clicks" when fully tightened,restart vehicle and drive for at least 15 minutes at speeds above 35 MPH.
If the light sill stays on,then there is a problem with the system.

Thank you for injecting some actual knowledge into an ATOT car thread for once. The misinformation about cars around here is astounding. It just cements my belief that most people will ramble on without ever being concerned with whether their information is correct or not.

One more thing on the actual problem. I have found that some cars will not always reset the trouble light in a timely fashion and some won't reset it at all. If the light persists go to the local auto parts store that loans out scanners and use the scanner to clear the error codes from the computer. If the light comes back on then you have a problem that you will need to investigate further.

had this happen on mine a few years ago. it went away on its own once the gas cap was tightened.

alright thanks all , problem is fixed, the 'check fueld cap' thing went away when I took the car out for lunch today... so I guess it just took awhile to reset
