Hi guys.
I finally got my garage rebuild into a studio / jamming area. Time to rock!
But, I really like to do some recordings as well. I have done so in the past, with some nice results, but my gear is not exactly modern. I would really like a second opinion of which way to go.
I hope this is the right forum, if not, please point me in the right direction.
My setup:
Various guitars and basses though Peavey amps
Acoustic guitar, crappy Yamaha keyboard and electric drum kit though a Yamaha MG 1002 mixer.
Shure SM58 and a condenser mic through the same Yamaha mixer.
MIDI Keyboard / Controller thorugh computer
Computer through mixer.
The mixer goes to a power amp, and to my computer.
My computer:
AMD 64 3000+
2 GB RAM
320 GB HDD
USB 2.0 and Firewire ports
...and (here it comes): Sound Blaster Live !
Software:
CuBase VST
Reason
Band in a box
Audacity
So, the sound card is obviously inadequate, but what should I do? I have a number of problems:
1) I can only record 2 channels at a time. Normally, I use layer-by-layer recording anyway, but I cannot record analogue drums this way. On the other hand, using the electric drum kit for recording might be less of a hassle.
2) Recording quality is actually surprisingly good, but not great.
3) Latency is high
4) I would like to be creative with the MIDI out on the drums, and the MIDI controller, but the sound card is not up to the task.
What to do? Head over to another site which specializes in audio? Get an M-Audio cheap multichannel sound card? Switch to one of ProTools Lite flavours?
