My HOA has gone off the deep end... Apparently I can't let my grill cool down anymore.

I just got the stupidest violation letter from my HOA, i know they are assholes but this is above and beyond. Apparently I'm in violation of the HOA rules since I left the cover off the grill on my patio, which mind you was sitting right next to the grill which I had just used (I use the grill every 3-4 days).

I don't exactly think its safe to put a cover on the grill when its 500-600 degrees, so I let it cool and put the cover back on a few hours later. The letter I got details the time of the "violation", it was about 30 minutes after I had used it last week for lunch to grill up some chicken.

Too many old people around here with too few things to do. HOA's suck, but you really can't live anywhere in FL without them anymore. I hate this place.

Do you live in a condo? Because that's what this sounds like.

Townhouse, so yes, its essentially a condo with a second story.

Old people care about one thing and one thing only. Property values.

And maybe screwing young people out of SS and medicare money.

Next time put the cover on and let it start your deck on fire. Sue the shit out of your HOA.

If its against the rules to leave the cover off, I guess I should just cook with the cover still on.

Ok... that makes more sense... so a fence is out.

What is there reasoning for wanting a cover on it? It looks neater?

Write them a letter:

"Dear HOA. Thank you for pointing out to me that the CC&Rs require all grills to be covered. I was unaware of this requirement. Rest assured that the next time I use my grill, I will very quickly put the cover on so as not to violate the letter of the law. Please let me know to what address and to whom I should send the ruined grill and bill for replacement when doing so melts the cover to the grill due to the high heat generated by fire and retained by metal. If you don't wish to be liable for my property damages, then enforce the spirit of the regulation by allowing me to let the grill cool after use, which is what I was doing on the day in question."

it takes like 4 minutes for my bbq to drop from 450 to 200 degrees with the flames ON, why would yours take hours to cool down? also, you know its vented at the bottom too, right?

that said, those people suck for even caring you had the lid off, let alone 30 minutes after you used it. i say fight it, take over the council and spend a two week vacation watching every move they make and cite them for the stupidest shit you can find.

My HOA recently banned all grills except electric. People got really pissed but nothing we can do about it. Wish I made more money so I could move.....but that will come with time. I just go to my parents house to grill

Its electric so the entire unit heats up with the metal coils.

WTFBBQ

Thanks for the chuckle. I'm sorry but, all you folks dealing with crazy HOA rules and regs got no one to blame but yourselves. You do have choices, it's just that you'd rather put up with the insanity and rant about it then live somewhere further away or in a less desirable neighborhood.

As I mentioned, not in FL. If you want a house built in the past 30 years, your more likely than not to be covered under a HOA.

HOA's are decidely un-American in concept and practice. They are Proof that Kruschev was right.
HOA...that stands for HOSTAGE Owners Association. With the emphasis on ASS. <rimshot>
There is nothing I love more than HOA bashing.

Seriously, ask for written clarification of policy regarding Cool -Off time, so you can have it when it catches fire due to their unreasonable and unsafe policies.
Pay some paralegal to write it up in Legal-ese to add some "punch".
Take it as seriously as you can, becase#1. Fire Prevention is no laughing matter and #2. INSURANCE costs are borne ( amortized) by everyone, especially within an HOA development.
THAT's their legal hat hook, make it yours as well.

Good luck, I say make their 'Good-Old-Boy' meeting a little more interesting.

So, you have the choice of an older home, a condo, an apartment, a trailer and, last time I looked there was a fair amount of real estate for sale. Point is, you would rather deal with crazy HOA's than choose one of the other options.
