My high school, Chaminade, is an all boys school on Long Island New York. It's sister school, a co-ed school, Kellenburg canceled their prom in September saying it has turned into a "giant booze filled orgy" and they won't take part of it as a Catholic school. No one thought our school would be affected especially with its all-boys status and already "gay" label.

But nope..now its a few months later and they cancelled ours...
you can see the official letter with the reasonings at their website:
Prom Cancellation Letter to Parents

Newsday, News 12 and all the local news stations are covering it...Bill O'Reilly will probably cover it because he is a Chaminade graduate...its getting publicity but I'm not sure it will change anything.

Yes...the things they say DO happen after prom but its OUT of school...drinking and partying will happen every weekend in high school as a senior whether theres a prom or not....its a persons individual option to partake in it or to refuse. May i note that the administration of the school admits to NO INAPPROPRAITE BEHAVIOR HAPPENING AT THE PROM ITSELF...its only the after prom activities they are concerned about (no one shows up drunk nor is allowed to leave early so the prom itself isnt a problem). A school long tradition doesn't have to be destroyed to try to stop it. It is too extreme...the kids in school are going crazy and rightfully so...and it being one of the only co-ed events we hold... makes it just worse.

I don't really know why im posting this..maybe just to vent and see what people think about it... so...

oh and here is our local newspaper link to their coverage of it:
No Prom for Chaminade High School

no, its not like that...its not a "punishment" so its not coming back...they just say the "pop culture" that proms have evolved into doesn't fit in with their catholic school tradition

hmm. throw your own party

agreed. Everyone get wasted on what should be your prom night, come home visibly drunk (just be sure to have designated drivers), and either skip school or come pretending to have a hang over on monday to show that you guys are going to be drinking with or without the prom.

Doubt it will change, and since its practically run by the catholic church I doubt they will change their position. I went to catholic private schools growing up also, and while we had a prom (which most people didn't go anyways) with a all-girl sister school, we didn't have many dances or similar functions.

No offense, but you're not missing out on much.

Oh yeah, except the giant booze-filled orgy, but you can set one of those up without blowing hundreds of dollars on a tux, etc.

I think the sister school just didn't want you gays there. Think about from the guys at the other schools perspective. Would you want to invite a school with a bunch of guys? If your answer is yes then you will understand why your school has the ?Gay? label.

Instead of paying several hundred dollars on prom, spend it on booze. Who needs a DJ either? Winamp + shuffle + crossfade ftw.

Is this the story that was in the news a few months ago? All the rich parents said they'd throw their own prom, even going as far as renting a $10,000+ hall.
