My hard drive won't delete things?

So the other day I was running norton speeddisk to try to optimize my 120gb hard drive. I was using that because the windows defrag program often left tons of my files fragmented. If I remember correctly, I let the program run for a while, then I stopped it to play a game or something, and later when I came back to start it again, it told me I didn't have enough free disk space. I don't remember doing anything that would take up my extra disk space (I was under the impression that I had something like 10gb left) but according to windows I had only 1.2gb of space left.

So I decided I needed to start clearing up some things. I had a lot of junk left on the hard drive, so I started deleting things. I probably deleted around 3-4 gigs of stuff right at the start, but after that windows still told me I only had 1.2gb of space left. I then tried deleting a 500 gigabyte movie, which actually worked, giving me 1.7gb of space, but nothing since then seems to have been properly deleted. The things I delete no longer show up in the folder where they were located of course. It always seems like they've been properly erased, but then when I look in My Computer, the amount of free space I have always shows up as 1.7gb.

Any idea what could be causing this and how I can fix it?

You have Norton Systemworks installed, and it has undoubtedly enabled its recycle bin protection. Empty the "Norton Protected Files" to reclaim your free space.
