MY hard drive will only work with a 40 pin cable, whats the deal?

I have a modern hard drive, probablly less then 2 years old. I have used it plenty of times before with a regular 40 pin cable. I just did some spring cleaning of my rig, and after all was said and done the only way I can get this hard drive recognized is when using a 40 pin cable. When I try with and 80 pin(I have tried a couple differant ones)its not recognized by the BIOS. What could be the problem?
 
Could be improperly set jumpers on the drive. 80 wire cables are cable select compatible and more finicky about drive placement. Master device is supposed to go on the end, slave on the middle connector. It usually shouldn't cause problems, but that's the first place I would look.
 
Yeah I just thought of that a bit ago, I just hooked it up to the empty slave connector on the same ribbon cable as my main drive, now it works fine.
