Hello,

My motherboard died so i replaced it with an identical one and now my system works. The only problem is that my extra hard drive that I keep in the system for data backup doesn't work. It shows up in the device manager, but in disk management it says that it's a dynamic disk and that it's offline. When i try to reactive it I cannot. There is the option to change it to a basic disk but all data would be lost.

Does anyone know what happened and what i can to to preserve the data. I can't get to the drive to see the data to back it up. Is there a way to convert it back to a basic disk without losing the data?

My guess is that windows for some reason converted it to dynamic when i first booted after putting in the new mobo.

Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks.

Strange that Windows converted your disk to dynamic by itself. Anyway before you can use a dynamic
disk you have to import it. I forget exactly how to do this but look for Disk Management or something in Control Panels|Administrative Tools.

Unfortunately i can't import it or do anything with it as it says that it's unreadable in the disk management section in admin tools.

Try partition magic 8. It has a ton of useful tools and worked for me when disk management drew a blank....

I just tried PM8 but no luck. It doesn't seem to work on dynamic drives.

There must be a utility that can change a dynamic drive back to basic w/o losing data.

Thanks for the suggestions.
