i have -5.5/-5.3 vision. And it keeps getting worse. I started wearing glasses in 3rd grade, and its been all down hill from there.

I've had glasses since the end of 2nd grade and although my vision was getting worse every year for a while, it's pretty much stabilized over time (I don't know how bad it is right now, but I do know I can't function without my "eyes" in the morning). Getting small-framed glasses (just about little ovals, really) and using polycarb lenses has been really helpful for keeping the weight and thickness of my glasses down. Also, just about everything I do now is very well-lit -- no more reading in dim light, computing without other lights in the room on (kills my geekgrrl image, i know 😉), studying in partial light -- it's really helped reduce my eyestrain. The LCD on my laptop has also been wonderful 🙂 but constant breaks are still best...

Contacts were a disaster on me...I have astigmatism fairly bad, and the lenses are thick for me, so I can feel them in my eyes and they dry out very fast. In any case, no amount of corrective lenses or coatings have helped out the astigmatism to a large degree at all...part of the reason I hate driving at night and/or during bad weather. I'm hoping to get LASIK soon...I know some people who've had fantastic results and my mom currently works at an eye surgery center, so maibee :]

get lasig. They are costing about $499 per eye. Don't laugh -- you can get it for just one eye because for some people one eye is worse then the other. Some insurance cover part of the cost of surgery too so they don't have to pay for new lenses every two years.

I would be in no rush to get LASIK, since the technology is improving rapidly and expending eye tissue on current methods leaves you less for the future. Do note that the offers of "corrections" and "adjustments" by LASIK providers involve vaporizing additional eye tissue.
I'm astigmatic, have strabismic amblyopia, and a cataract too.
I'll post if my intraocular lens has problems, since installation is in two weeks. Muscle realignment for strabismus will be performed after post-cataract stabilization. LASIK might offer some tweaking after everything else, but I'll wait on topologic lasers for more precise work.

don't get new glasses, your eyes will get worse as it adjust to the new lens. My eye sight was steadily getting worse until 5 years ago I stopped getting new prescription for my lens (my eye doctor's recommendation). Now my prescription has stablized (still has my regular check every year).

I wore contacts a long time ago but has stopped very soon afterwards. I don't want to risk ANY injuries to my eyes; the risk is just not worth it, for the small convience it gets you.
