My girlfriends PC is being strange...

Ideas?

I'm on her old Dell now. The problem is, the ****** just stopped powering on. You hit the button and then you hear a tiny little powerup noise and the fans spin less than a 1/4 of a turn then the PC does nothing. No start-up at all. If you turn the PSU off and wait a second, you'll hear a little electronic noise out of it, like something clicked. When you flip it back on and hit the power button again, it does the same as just described above.

Her little USB diagnostic thing blinks on for half a second and shows 1, 2 lights red and 3 and 4 as green. Which could mean three things. 1. The CPU is damaged/installed incorrectly. However, I don't think this is my problem, as it's a brand new CPU in there and it's been working just fine for the past few months. 2. The HDD controller is somehow failing to intialize, but that doesn't make sense, since the PC would still powerup and I tried a new hard drive to no avail. 3. It means nothing and it's just flashing on for a quick second before the PC stops doing whatever the ****** it should be.

Ideas? I'm at a loss here. I tried new ram, new hard drive, new PSU, all connections are fine, the mobo isn't grounding out on the case from what I can tell, so what the hell?

Some have suggested it might be a mobo problem.
If that's the case, will an el cheapo mobo work? Like this, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813186061

Or this one

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813138019

BTW, she games a little bit in the form of Oblivion and The Sims.`

Unplug your HDDs ASAP so they don't get fried, and buy a new PSU and you should be up and running quickly. Do a search for some of the recent power supply threads on this forum and follow their recommendations, so you know which one to buy.

oh sorry... I don't believe that you mentioned this in your original post... I just suggested the most likely cause based on what the symptoms you described to me were. A system can POST without a hard drive/hard drive controller, so I don't believe that's it... Your next step is getting the mainboard to POST and at this point this sounds like a new board is needed. As you already know this, it would be helpful to give your system specs to make it easier to comment on what you've recommended for yourself :cookie:

most people on this forum will suggest that you just use this opportunity to upgrade your own system, then give your old one to your gf, or you can just go the el-cheapo route, although, if that's what you wanted to do, I'm not sure if you would be posting here...

I have my own system. The Pc I'm having problems with is my old one I gave to her.
Athlon 2800+
MSI K7N2G mobo
1gig DDR400 Mushkin Ram
GeForce 6600GT

As stated, she games with Oblivion and The Sims a bit. Ideally I'd like to replace the mobo with a good quality one that will allow her to play games just the same, but I'm not sure where to find them.

well, you know about newegg, so half the battle is won 😉 anyhow, Gigabyte, MSI, ASus, DFI are the main brands that ppl seem to buy and are happy with. I have an MSI board in my system and it seems to work ok. I wanted a Gigabyte, but the computer shop I went to only stocked MSI. Gigabyte boards seem to have better BIOSes and more overclocking options, and ppl say that Asus boards are generally stable, although, that should apply to any board as long as you're not overclocking. My board is an MSI 6712 KT3V, which is kinda old. I built it 3 years ago. Wish I could be of more help, but I think any socket A board from those companies would do fine. The main question is the processor type whether it is AMD 64, or Athlon XP. I'm just going to assume that you know what you're doing on that front.
