My girlfriend wants to visit Alaska...

in the middle of December. She says she wants to ride a sled see the aurora, glaciers and other things we can watch by turning on the Discovery Channel. I told her being in the Arctic in the winter isn't the best idea cause a lot can go wrong. But she's still determined to go. She wants to visit a particular hot spring that's open year round.

I told her we should take a cue from the migratory birds and go somewhere warmer but she won't hear of it.

I don't like this one bit.

I agree with you. You should experience all of life's wonders through the television. What is she thinking?

Give me her number. I'll take her to alaska in your place.

She sounds like an awesome girlfriend. Not wanting to just stay in one place her whole life, get out and experience the world and see different places and things and enjoy life.

You sound like an asshole.

You need to harden up OP. Sounds like your GF has bigger balls than you TBH.

Says the guy living in NZ.

Anyway, Gay is right in this case. You're being a huge pussy. What about the 700,000 people who live up there year round? Do they die off all winter?

Alaska isn't arctic anyway, it's too populated. Try the NWT... only 25,000 in the whole territory outside Yellowknife.

Alaska would probably be kind of expensive I bet. If you're going to spend that kind of money, go to somewhere like Iceland.

ATOT never disappoints when it comes to derision. I'm a Texan living in New York so I know all about wildlife. Winter, however, should never be taken lightly.

You sound like a moron who doesn't know anything about the outdoors at all. Wilderness should never be taken lightly - period. But that doesn't mean you sit at home and cower in a corner because there might be some animals or weather outside!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!! THE WORLD IS ENDING!!!!!

Geez...it sounds like your GF wants to do something fun. You know that people LIVE in Alaska YEAR ROUND RIGHT? They don't just say OH SHIT it's WINTER ZOMG WTF BBQ!!! WHAT WILL WE DO!!! WINTER!!!!!!

Your girlfriend should dump you and find a real man.

And, yet, you fail to understand the difference between a native and a visitor. People may strategize their visits but they forget the key element of logistics. What to wear; what to expect; what your body is used to. These are not things you can easily pick up before going, depending on where you're coming from.

clothes are pretty easy to pick up and im 100% positive vacation packages exist for exactly whey your GF wants to do and they will tell you EXACTLY what you need

So your saying you don't understand winter clothing? Sweaters and parkas are too much?

I'm assuming Alaskan winter is a bit colder...

Am I wrong?

Look it up

Average in January/February is going to be around -10 F. Probably a bit colder than what your used to in NY but you'll be fine. Seriously, people live in Yakutsk. Average high of -33 F and you're worried about going to Fairbanks? I don't think you give yourself enough credit as a human.
