Answer truthfully, but express that answer in a more positive way. "Well, I've known her for quite some time, but as a matter of fact, we are now dating."

You have no obligation to tell the company about your personal relationship. Only a dumb interviewer is gonna call "personal" references and think they are going to get 100% pure facts anyway.
