Wake up and smell what you're shoveling. You have obviously have no f'ing clue what it takes to succeed in the real world. No amount of ass-kissing will ever get you a promotion if you don't produce. You can be the best ass-kisser to have ever kissed ass, but if you don't perform, you're gettin a pink slip. Being well-liked will only facilitate promotion, it by no means serves as a substitution for performance.
What I mean by putting up with crap is long hours, BS deadlines, rough travel schedules, seemingly ungrateful superiors, and general sacrifices created by work. What does pride have to do with anything? Sitting around the water cooler talking about our golf games or busting each others chops about our alumni sports teams is kissing ass? Oh yah, I forgot, the majority of people here never attended a sporting event when in college, hell they probably don't even know what their mascot is. They were just happy their dorm rooms had Ethernet. I think you would show more pride to take anything they threw at you and see it through to the end, but I guess not everyone has what it takes to do that.

I'm quite sure I know what it takes to "succeed" in the real world, and I'm not willing to do it. It's just not worth it to me to be some jerk's lapdog just so I get a piece of his leftovers. I guess you're satisfied with lying on the floor and licking up your master's crumbs. Not me. The only reason I stand on the corporate ladder at all is to pay for starting my own businesses. Once one of those takes off, it's goodbye corporate America.

Michael, congrats to you and your gf...I think you seem to realize that there is a line between adapting to your work environment and recognizing a horrible corporate culture. that place sounds rather nasty. :|
I hope that she survives the day ok. From what you have said, I too am scared to hear of some appaling actions on their part.
Anyway, a new job is starting, and new opportunities. YAY! 🙂

LoL you have no f'ing clue do you? Your first mistake is trying to raise capital for a business through personal finances. Based on your apparent problem with authority, I'm guessing you're pretty low on the totem pole, so you may just be waiting forever to start your businesses. The 2 main things investment bankers/venture capitalists look for in start-up companies is 1) a sound business plan and 2) confidence in management. You sir, convey neither. Hell, I'd arrange financing through my firm if it weren't for your assinine comments.
Corporate America is a game, one you obviously haven't mastered. Everyone's a b!tch at some point in life, you'll just be one longer than most.
Good luck in your future endeavours.

Yes, she already has another job, starting 8 Jan 2003. 🙂
This has been a long time coming. She's been passed over for promotion due to the fact that she won't go out and drink with everyone after work (including the management who aren't supposed to be socializing with the peons!) and refuses to kiss the collective ass of those who have been w/the company LESS time and know LESS than she does.![]()
After helping her tailor her resumes/dress for interviews (this was her first "real job"....) and many, MANY months of being turned down (not hired) she finally got a second, then a third interview. Then she got "The Call." HIRED.
She went last Thursday to do the pre-employment paperwork, the pee test and all that jazz. 100% done and she's hired. 😀
So, she spent last night typing up her resignation letter. It would've taken me 30 seconds...but she's all nervous since this is the first real job that she's actually quit...as opposed to getting laid off or fired.
I'm very proud of her. She's done well. By leaving now, she's really sticking it to them too. The branch manager was promoted and transferred out last week. So, the two asst managers (this is a bank) have been trying to fill in. They are already TWO people short due to one person got fired and the other one is on maternity leave. Plus, it's the very end of the year...a busy time for financial institutions. I say turnabout is fair play. 😎
Her new job will pay her about $50 a month LESS, but in return, she gets every Sunday off, PLUS she knows her daily schedule one month in advance as opposed to two days in advance at the current job.
I wanted to share this w/you folks. A lot of the stresses we've gone thru have been b/c of her job. Today is a big day for me too. 🙂

Once in a while the person promoted has fooled the promoting person into thinking that they were pretty good but turns out that they were extremely bad at the job, the person promoting has made a large mistake which that they cannot admit to because a mistake like this is not tolerated within the Corp. So he brags up this person and someone else wants to steal him so he takes this person into their tier of management so incompetence has gained the most.

Hardly. Go back to polishing your knob little boy.
Oh...we'll miss you...so where are you going to work?
I don't think that's any concern of yours
Amen to that, Bob! After many, many years of corporate life, I refused to do just that. Hard work never paid off for me. I did O.K., but not great. By hard work, I was dedicated, on call 24x7, etc. During big projects, I would be in at 4:00 A.M. coding like a MoFo. Unfortunately, because I couldn't kiss azz, the end arrived for me. Happily, I accepted a severance package equal to a little over 10 months of pay and walked out the door that day.The reason I have no confidence in management is because most managers are incompetent, and got their position not through wise decisions, or even through hard work, but through kissing executive ass.
