My GeForce 2 GTS 32 DDR makes my machine crash...please help.

Well, I bought the card from computer geeks because a Hercules GeForce 256 DDR DVI I had previously purchased was crashing my machine. The new card behaves the same way. Here are the details

My system:

P III 450 not overclocked
Soyo 6BA+III Mobo
128MB Mushkin PC133
256MB Viking PC 133
Generic NIC with Realtek chip
Antec 300W Power Supply
Generic 20X CD-ROM
Plextor 12/10/32 CD-RW
AGP currently with VisionTek GeForce 2 GTS 32MB DDR

Here is what happens...The computer runs fine when 2D graphics are used. Solid. Problem occurs when I try to play Quake III. The game will run fine for 2 seconds up to 15 or so minutes....then the image freezes and if there is a sound effect, the effect will go into a loop.

This occured with both the regular GeForce I have and the GeForce 2 GTS. This does not happen with the TNT2 I was peviously using.

I have tried different sound cards and omitting the sound card, but there is no effect with any of this activity.

Here are some other things I have noticed:

When my computer loses power...unplugged, etc. there is a checksum error at post and I have to reset the bios. This has happened before the vid problem, but maybe it is a contributing factor.

Other wierd thing is that durig the post, the auto detect of the IDE things reports my Plextor drive as being a "insert matrix code looking stuff here" So maybe the mobo is going bad.

I suspect the Power supply or the mobo.

Thanks for any help.

Tech savy members? What did you expect to find here? This only the premire geek hub on the internet at this time.

What drivers are you using for your new card? Did you try downloading the latest Nvidia reference drivers off their website? It sounds more like a driver problem than a motherboard or power supply problem. Which sound card are you using? I had problems with Unreal Tournament when I would try to run the hardware accelerated sound enabled. I would get similar lockups to those you describe. Which operating system are you using? The cheapo burned CD that came with my CompGeeks Visiontek geforce 2 GTS couldn't even be read by my cheap 40x BTC CD-ROM nor my HP 9150i burner! Lucikily I had already downloaded the latest reference drivers for my old GF2MX and still had a copy on my "D" drive. FWIW, my compgeeks visiontek GTS works great in my MSI-6309 with PIII600E @ 744. PS Just a suggestion, dissing the members is probably not the way to get people to go out of their way to try to help you.

Hmmm. after reading my post I guess it does sound like a slap. Not exactly what I ment though. I hang out at car sites and some of them are very bench racing oriented while others are more technical. After going hours with no response, I just figured Anandtech had gone into more shoot the breeze than tech. Thanks for your response.

I forgot to mention that I started with a SB Live value and then changed to a Turtle Beach Montego and finished with removing the sound card all together. I tried multiple drivers for both sound cards and the video card as well. None of this made a difference. I am running Win2K.

I decided to try and see if Tribes 2 would behave any different, but it would not run at all.

Anyway, thanks for the advice.

I hope y'all are not too offended at the "tech savy" remark and keep in mind that I myself am not overly tech savy; as that is why I asked the Q.

Have a good night all.

See novice's post. Video drivers, what are they? I have had many a lockup during games with looping sound and replacing the video drivers fixed most.

Hey Mitchydkid,

I'm fairly sure that what you need to do is force your AGP speed to 1X instead of the default 2X speed. I had the same problem with my GTS and Soyo 6BA+IV and tried for a whole weekend to get the GTS to work in 3D. Even throwing it, kicking it, swearing at it, and putting it in the microwave didn't seem to help! Finally I found out that something like NVTweak or a registry fix can bring happiness and is a LOT easier on the vocal chords 😉 I'm not sure if the NVTweak settings are automatically applied at bootup but I know that the registry fix always sticks. If you are using reference drivers (this may work with other drivers as well) and you enable your profile so I can see your e-mail address then I can send you the reg files 🙂

Edit: Or you could just private message me your address 😱

Thanks for the additional help everyone. I am going to dive back into this tonight.

ObiDon, you made Pepsi come out of my nose!!

I will update if any of these things work in case anybody wants to know.

Thanks

Catch Y'all later
