My gas tank guage never goes all the weay to full when I fill it up. It always stops 3 quarters of the way from the 3 quarter mark. It does not go any further that. I want an exclamation of why. Do you think that the previous owner could of changed the gas tank?

Gibson486,

I don't think it has been replaced. I know my tank in my Scirocco was the original and it only went to about 7/8 but my Jetta which also has the original tank goes to about 1 1/4. The sensor or the gauge is just screwed up.

Just read: :)P)
To measure your gas level in the tank, there's a float in there.
It's a little more complicated than that, but I'll leave it at that :)
basically the float sits at a certain level, the rheastat (volume knob-like thing) changes it resistance. The gas guage changes it's reading based on that resistance level.

SO: there are 2 possible causes:

#1. The float rheastat is the wrong (was replaced with the wrong one)

OR

#2. The float is caught on something and isn't reading properly.

Hope that helps :)

How many gallons does it take when you fill it up? Have you ever run out of gas? How many gallons is it suppose to take? What sort of mileage are you getting? Do ducks fly south for the winter?

All of these questions might help you answer your question.

The sending unit may not be properly calibrated.
The sending unit may be malfunctioning.
The gauge could be malfunctioning.

The gauge does not care how much your tank holds, it only cares how full it is (a percentage of full). I seriously doubt you have a different capacity gas tank if it has been changed. If it has been changed, it is 99% probably an exact replacement.

When I fill it from a quarter tank it takes about 9.1 gallons. Nope, never ran out of gas. It is supposed to take 16 gallons. I get around 22-26 miles to the gallon, it really depends how fast i go that week. i do not know, but I know that penguins like wintery weather.

I would opt for a sticky/malfunctioning sensor unit. On the older cars the rod that held the float sensor would rust and cause the sensor to hang-up.

try keeping the tank as full as possible every day and see if that changes the reading.
